z'khut avōt: birthright: the eldest received twice as much of the parents' inheritance as their other siblings and they became the spiritual leader of the family upon their father's death – in the Old Testament of the Bible this was usually only applied to sons, but in the case that there were no sons or sons-in-law, the birthright could pass to a daughter instead.
