Star Blazers

Data file #2-More Characters

This is a continuation of my quick guide, with illustrations where available, to the major characters of the Star Blazers series as portrayed in my Visions series. Many of these notes are fan speculation. They are not canon but are reasonable guesses made by myself for this series of tales.)

The first section covers canon characters. The second section will cover original characters I made up for the Visions universe or characters borrowed ("crossed-over") from other fictional universes.

Section One-Canon Characters

CANON CHARACTERS-EARTH. This list will cover some main characters-This is not a complete list of Star Blazers characters.

2. Secondary Canon Characters-Star Force. (Crew: Argo/Yamato)

(This covers the characters as they were in late 2201-early 2202, as right after Star Blazers/Yamato2)

Peter "Pete" Conroy--Black Tiger Flight Group Leader-Space Battleship Argo

Japanese name: Saburo Kato

First appeared in the third episode of Star Blazers-series 1 (SB-1). He was brash yet cool as a cucumber. He was the Commander of the Black Tigers Flight Group on the Argo's first voyage to Iscandar in 2199, flying a Black Tiger-Type 1 Astrofighter. In 2201, he was assigned to a Flight Group serving on the EDF Base of the Moon, flying the new Cosmo Tiger II Astrofighter. He and his Group abandoned the Base to join in the Star Force's mutiny and the voyage to Telezart. He fought well with the Star Force, and fought heroically in the assault upon the Comet Empire City Ship Gatlantis in November of 2201, returning to the ship with Wildstar and Sandor even though seriously wounded. (He died after landing in the original Yamato 2 version of the Comet Empire series; this death was cut from Star Blazers.) In my Visions saga, other woks of fan fiction, and the second Star Blazers comic series from Comico, he recovered and lived on to again lead the Black Tigers. In the later Yamato series, he was replaced by his twin brother, Shiro Kato...which might make one wonder...why did they kill him off in the first place?

Jefferson Davis Hardy--Black Tiger Flight Grp. 2nd Squadron Leader-Space Battleship Argo

Japanese name: Akira Yamamoto

First appeared in the fourth episode of Star Blazers I, crashing into the Argo before her first warp, although he was mistakenly identified as "Conroy" and overdubbed with his voice (the hair in the right eye gives it away when you watch the episode), Hardy served with the Black Tigers during first series although he wasn't seen again. He reappeared in the second series as the second squadron leader of the Tigers, and had plenty of fracases with his foil, Sergeant Webb Knox, on the way to Telezart, mostly because Knox seemed to think he could borrow his Tiger whenever he felt like it, and of course, in Hardy's words, "Nobody flies mah plane!". He also got in very, very deep with Venture once over spreading scuttlebutt about him and Trelaina. If there's a "scuttlebutt express" on the Argo, he's usually the engineer. :-) He apparently died in Yamato 2 when he was last seen going down in a death-dive near the Gatlantis, but the crash wasn't shown, unlike in Arrivederci Yamato. Needless to say, this death was also cut out of Star Blazers, and he has returned in my Visions saga, as well as in the second Comico comic series, and loads of other fan fiction and fan art both here and on the other side of the Pacific. Quite a popular character. Must be the cool hairdo, attitude, and his neat Southern accent in the US series.

Sgt. Webb Knox--Marine Security Squadron Leader-Planet Brumus (deceased-2201)

Japanese name: Hajime Saito

Sgt. Knox first appeared in episode 6 of the second season of Star Blazers as the defeated commander of the embattled Marine Security Detachment on Planet Brumus (Planet #11). He and some of his outnumbered men managed to survive the large Cometine landing with the help of the Star Force and got evacuated out of the battle area on the Argo when it was obvious their base was too badly damaged and they were in an untenable position. Knox and his men caused trouble on the Argo frequently as the gruff commander tried to deal with his defeat, but he and his men came in handy in several actions the Star Force had to fight in their mission. Knox's greatest moment came when he and his men helped the Star Force invade the Gatlantis city. Knox and Wildstar were the last two left to place charges around the Cometine ship's energy center. Knox remained behind to set the charges and sent Wildstar out of the area. After being seriously wounded (not shown in Star Blazers, but very evident in Yamato 2), Knox set off the charges. In Yamato 2, he was shown standing right hear the reactor when this happened; a clever cut in Star Blazers disguised this fact. He was not seen again, but in Star Blazers 2, in a famous line, per Dash, "Knox got out right behind you, Wildstar." A lot of other fanfic writers accept this notion and have Knox recovering to fight again, but in the Visions universe, as a matter of personal preference, I established that he got out and returned, but was fatally wounded and did die. This does not mean that other SB fanfic writers aren't "right" in having this character around-I just chose to work otherwise, since I feel it should be shown that the Comet Empire effort was not a bloodless victory for Earth...or the Star Force.

Travis Sparks-Assistant Engineer-Space Battleship Argo (Deceased-2200)

Japanese name: Sukeharu Yabu

In the Iscandar story, this character was Orion's second-in-command in the engine room of the Argo. However, he brooded during the cruise about what might happen if they got back to Earth...and everyone was already dead from radiation poisoning due to the planet bombings? He was disciplined for this a few times by Orion, but he must have brooded about it quite a bit and convinced a good-sized group of his friends of the same thing. As a result, they hatched a plan (of course, without permission from Avatar, Wildstar, or Queen Starsha) to set up a new colony of humanity on an empty island on the empty planet Iscandar. The flaws in their plan included the fact that: 1) Diamond Island was near a very geologically unstable part of Iscandar...and 2) Nova Forrester was an unwilling, kidnapped participant in Sparks' scheme. Kidnapping any female to use for unwilling breeding stock for about 12 guys is reprehensible enough, but kidnapping the XO's girlfriend showed a serious lack of intelligence on Sparks' part. Sparks and company refused to heed Wildstar's warning that Diamond Island was due to blow in an earthquake and get overcome by a tsunami, so he and his band paid the ultimate price...luckily, Nova had enough sense to get away from this bunch, getting rescued from Diamond Island with a broken wrist and being the sole survivor of the whole tragic mess. Lesson to Nova: do not go off on errands with assistant engineers with kooky looks in their eyes. :-)

Neville Royster-Mechanical Group Officer-Space Battleship Argo

Japanese name: Hyota Arakome

This intelligent but nerdy (probably because it was his first space voyage) character first appeared in SB/Yamato 2 in the middle of the series. Despite his geekiness, he was a valued right-hand man to Sandor. In Yamato 2, he helped Sanada pinpoint the weak spot at the bottom of the Gatlantis and then died when the computer room he was in was hit by a Cometine attack. Needless to say, this death, too, was cut out of Star Blazers, as was the entire scene where he had aided Sandor. He has reappeared in several fan fiction pieces, and the Visions storyline just happens to be one of them. He also grows up a bit in my alternate storyline on his second voyage on the Argo.

General Charles Singleton--Commanding General- Earth Defense Forces

Japanese name: Heikuro Todo

This officer first appeared in Star Blazers/Yamato I episode # I in the year 2199 as the Chief Commander of the Earth Forces (his title in the Japanese series is Chokan or Chief Commander of the EDF.). He has maintained that position ever since in every Yamato movie and series and every episode of Star Blazers. He is a decisive, disciplined but noble General who will always try to do the right thing, even if it might mean skirting a regulation or two. He is especially friendly to the Star Force since Captain Avatar was apparently a close friend of his, and he developed a rare respect for and faith in the qualities of young Derek Wildstar even when the rest of the EDF Command only saw Wildstar as nothing but a wild rebel. His instincts have helped save Earth several times over, and he is a stern but good man.

Brigadier General Thomas Stone--Chief Of Staff- Earth Defense Forces

Japanese name: (uncertain)

This officer appeared in Star Blazers/Yamato 2 as the Commander's Chief of Staff. He is in direct day-to-day command over the Fleet, and he does not approve of any disciplinary breaches, even for what might be a good reason. He wanted both the Star Force and Captain Gideon severely punished for breaches of discipline, and he was the actual officer who, over Singleton's objections, tried to shoot down the Argo with a battle satellite when the Star Force mutinied in 2201. He is a tough officer, not tolerant of any breaches of discipline and acting strictly-maybe a bit too strictly-"by the book." He continues as the second-in-command of the EDF in my Visions saga and was seen again in the canon series in Yamato-The New Voyage (possibly in a scene not used but detailed in one of the Perfect Manuals; I can't recall right now) and in Yamato/SB III (but without his mustache, so he was a little hard to spot).
