Returning New Hope
By Yuki Wildstar
6th of December, 2207
Months later the Wildstar’s settle down into their lives, Derek soon returned back to EDF and Nova took an extra leave of absence to be home. She took that time to re-evaluate her life. The hospital wanted her to continue with them and her contract with EDF was soon to be up. Derek supported her decision to what she wanted to do. He told her, “Whatever you want is alright with me. Though it would be great to have you working in the same building with me, we can have long lunches. If you get what I mean,” making her laugh. They met for lunch every day at the office cafeteria. She sat at the table near the window and waited for him to come down from his office. She looked out seeing the city in the clear afternoon sun light. The Sky was blue making the illusion it was hot outside. She knew better, the coat on the back of her chair told everyone it was cold out. She felt his hand on her shoulder and she continued looking out. His lips on her neck and cheek made her blush. “Hey baby, sorry I’m late.”
“It’s alright, Derek. How’s work going?”
“Same ole same ole. Contractors want more money but don’t want to work. Higher up think they can cut spending by cutting back on ships maintenance. I don’t know how Sandor deals with all this crap. Stone is the worst, he wants all ship to be run by computers that way there’s less men at risk. Although it’s a good idea, it will save lives. But in war you need people to work quick and think quick to fix things. If a ship is run by computers there’s no guarantee if the ship is hit that it will work. Suppose the main frame of the computer is hit what are the chances that it can revert to backup. There are just too many questions and what if.” He frowned and then thought as to why he needed to tell her. “Nova, I need to tell you something. I was handed orders.”
Nova face turned disappointed and she looked away. “This is not a good time Derek.”
“It’s never a good time. But,”
“No Derek, I really mean it. It’s not a good time.” She huffed and then continued. “I’m pregnant.”
He sat quietly across from her and took in what she said. “You’re serious.”
“Of course I am what would make you think I would kid around with something like this.” She giggled and then turned serious. “What are we going to do?”
“I’ll talk with Sandor he can get me out of it.”
He reached across the table and grabbed her hand. “No, I miss all of Alex and some of DJ. I won’t do it for this child. You can count on me to be there with you from now and until it’s born.” He kissed her hand and smiled at her. “Don’t worry I’ll get out of it. I love you.”
After lunch Derek marched into the Sandor office and sat down. “I have a problem.”
Sandor put his papers down and sat back. “Oh I hope it doesn’t require a lawyer or bail money.”
“No nothing like that. I’m having a baby.”
His eyes narrowed and said. “Well call the press, you’d be the first man to do such a great feet. Who’s the father? And how do you intend to have it.”
“You have jokes. I didn’t think scientist had a sense of humor. No, Nova’s pregnant 3 months along.”
“Congratulations Derek, I’m happy for you and Nova. I know how much you wanted another baby. But aren’t you set to go on a mission?”
“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. You think you can get me out of it until after the baby is born?”
“Hmm, I’ll see what I can do. I don’t think it would be a problem but I can’t promise you anything. Give me till the end of the day and I will have an answer for you.”
“Thanks Sandor. I’ll wait for your call.” They shook hands and Derek went back to his office and worked. By the end of day Derek wonder if his request was made. He picked up his phone and then heard the knock on the door. “Enter.”
Sandor walked in and said. “I had to work and pull some strings but I got your request. You should be safe for 3 months after the baby is born. After that I can’t do anything. Now there might be a possibility that they hand down orders for a year. But we will have to wait and see what happens then.”
“Thanks Sandor I don’t know how I’m going to repay you. Nova is going to be relieved that I’ll be here for her.”
Sandor smiled and said. “Send her my love. Well I have to get going. I have to drop by my company and then off to meet Yvey.”
“Yvey huh, looks like you really like her. She’s a nice girl. Nova and I like her a lot. She’s good for you. When are you going to bring her over for dinner?”
“Soon, very soon.” He smirked and blushed.
“Whoa you are serious. Well I’ll have to tell Nova to set a date for you two to come by. Anyway, I’ll see you later. I should finish up here too. Thanks again.” Derek shook his hand and Sandor left for his company. He finished his work and headed home. Nova was in the kitchen finishing dinner while his sons sat at the kitchen table finishing their homework. They both jumped up and hugged their father as he entered the room. Nova watched as they fussed over their father and smiled to herself knowing that their life was good. He walked over to her and kissed her passionately. “I have good news.”
“Oh Derek, please tell me that you got out of it.”
“Sandor made some changes and pulled some strings, but yeah I’m here till after the baby is born.” She hugged him tight and he laughed. “Boy, am I going to get a present tonight?”
“You sure are skipper. But first let’s get ready for dinner. I love you Derek.”
“I love you too.”

The months went quickly and Derek enjoyed going to all her appointments and seeing her grow. Every night he would touch her stomach hoping to feel it move inside of her. On the sixth month they went to her doctor appointment and watched as the technician move the camera around her stomach. Their baby’s image showed on the screen and Wildstar smiled wide. “Would you like to know the sex?” the technician asked. Nova looked at Derek and asked. “Do you?”
“Well did you find out with Alex.”
“Not really, although I knew.”
“DJ we found out.” He could see it on her face. He looked at the technician and said. “Yes we would.”
She smiled at the loving couple and said. “It’s a girl.”
Nova giggled with delight and Wildstar heart soared. “A girl! Wow, I always wanted to give you a girl. Now our family is complete.” He kissed the top of her head and said. “Are you happy?”
“Yes, but I’m afraid for you.”
“Why would you be afraid for me?”
“Well it’s a girl. She will be dating and,”
“Nova! I don’t even want to think of that. I better get my astro gun ready. Anyway she wouldn’t have to worry about me, it will be her brothers.”
“I wonder how the boys will take to her.”
“If they treat her anything like they treat you she is going to be spoil rotten.”
“What are we going to name her?”
“Let me think of a name.” Since then they shopped stores for their daughter’s things. Wildstar wouldn’t admit it but he like every minute of it. He pick little dress for her and surprised Nova with a pretty pink outfit to bring her home in. By her 8th month Derek notice she was slowing down. The extra weight made her tired and moody. He tried his best to keep her smiling. He cut his hours back to help her out with their sons. At night he would lay behind her and rub her back until she fell asleep. His heart went out to her realizing that this pregnancy was different from Alex and DJ. His mind wonder would she have a difficult delivery. Would something like Alex pregnancy happen again? Weeks before her due date she began to get contractions which made him a nervous wreck. He jumped each time she moaned in pain. Wildstar wasn’t sure if he should grab the phone and call the doctor. She kept assuring him that everything was fine. He finally stayed home and was trying to relax on the porch when she walked through the door and announced.
“Derek, its time.”
“Time for what? Do you want me to get you lunch.” He sat back and kept his eyes closed still relaxing.
She slapped him on the head and bent over as another contraction hit her hard. “No you idiot! It’s time! The Baby is coming!”
The blood from his face drain and he jumped up and took hold of her. “Breath baby, I’ll call the doctor and then get your things. Sit down and breathe.” He ran into the house and grabbed the phone and dialed the number. He talked to the doctor’s office as he ran into the room and grabbed her overnight bag. He hung up the phone and ran out the door to the car. Throwing her bag into the trunk he then jumped in the driver’s seat and pulled away. “Don’t worry baby, I’ll get you there.” He said and then reached for her hand. He wondered why he couldn’t feel her and then looked over. “OH shit,” and realizing that he left his wife. He turned the car around and saw her standing at the front door with a disapproving look. He jumped out the car while she shook her head. “Sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”
“I see.” She said as he helped her into the car. “What about the boys?”
“Shit I didn’t think of them. I’ll call,”
“Never mind Derek, I’ll call Venture and Sandor. I’m sure one can pick them up.” She pulled out her cell and dialed one number then the next. Both Sandor and Venture assured her that they would take care of the boys until Wildstar came for them. They arrived at the hospital and were ushered quickly to the labor and delivery. Her labor was harder from when DJ was born and she became more agitate as he tried to encourage her to breath. “WILL YOU JUST SHUT UP!” she screamed. He stepped back and put his hands in the air. “I don’t need you to keep telling me what to do! If you didn’t know I already have two kids by you! Now SHUT THE FUCK UP!” she turned on her side and began to breathe slowly to stop the pain from getting worst. Derek stood shock to her harsh words. When she had DJ she wasn’t as bad. But this time she was worst. Best to sit here and be quiet, he thought. The room stayed quiet as she breathed in and out. Only the sound of her breathing and the baby’s heart beat could be heard. Derek feared if he opened his mouth she would snap at him again. Hours of labor made her exhausted and she moaned from the pain. Derek ran his hand over her hair and offered her ice chips to take. By the 18th hour she begged for them to take the baby out. Wildstar became more nervous praying that she didn’t get the same fate when she had Alex. She could see the stress on his face and for once in her life she didn’t care. By the 20th hour her doctor announced that she was ready. “NO SHIT MORON!” Nova screamed at him. Her doctor and Derek looked at each other and huff. They knew it would be a long haul with her.
8th of June, 2208
Nova opened her eyes and looked over to the small bassinettes next to her and smiled. Derek slept in the chair next to her bed from a long night of labor. Nova reached for his arm and touched it. “Derek, Derek, hon.”
Derek opened his eyes and looked over with groggy eyes. He smiled at his wife and rubbed his eyes. “I’m up.” He told her. “How do you feel?”
“Still a little tired. But I’m feeling better.” He stood up and stretched from sleep on the uncomfortable chair. “How long was I out?”
“I’m not sure. I drifted off about 4 this morning. The baby should be getting up soon to feed. Do you want me to get your pillow?” He said as he ran his hand through her hair. She nodded and he kissed the top of her head. “She’s beautiful, Nova. She’s a mini you.”
“What should we name her?” she asked him.
He picked up his daughter and handed her to his wife. “I remember speaking to my mom about if she had a little girl that she would have called her Miku. She loved the name. So for my mom can we call her Miku?.” He gazed at the tiny infant in his arms and then up to his wife. “Do you like it?”
“I love it. Miku it is.” Derek handed his daughter to her and watched as she fed her. This moment was the best in his life. He had a beautiful wife that was smart and loving. Two young sons to carry on his name and now a beautiful little girl to brighten up his day, his life was now complete.
24th of October, 2208
Months later after settling in with their new baby girl Wildstar walked into his superior’s office and stood at attention. “Captain Derek Wildstar reporting as ordered, sir.” He snapped.
Admiral Singleton sat behind his desk and said, “At ease Captain. Thank you for coming. How’s Nova and the baby?”
Wildstar smile wide and said, “They are both doing well, sir.”
“And the boys, how are they doing with a sister?”
“They fuss over her so much. I hate to be the boy that comes to house for a date. It won’t be me that he will have to worry about,” making him laugh as well as himself.
Singleton took a deep breath and picked up a piece of paper. “I have new orders for you.” He said as he handed it to him.
He stared at it a few minutes and frowned. “A whole year, huh.”
“Sorry Wildstar but that is what happens when you turned down your last orders. You will be escorting Ambassadors Katamoto daughter. She is making her way to all the neighboring galaxies on a good will mission. We need to see what other planets out there are willing to keep peace with in our galaxy. “
“But Sir, a whole year?”
“Sorry Wildstar I know this isn’t what you wanted but you are next in line for command. She’s already to go. You leave in 2 months. Dismiss Captain.”
Wildstar snapped to attention and saluted. He pivot around and left his office. His heart almost stopped when he walked through the door. How was he going to tell Nova? When he gets back his daughter would be one year old. He would miss her first turn, her first crawl, her first steps and her first words. He wanted to cry just thinking of it. He walked back to his office and plop into his chair. His mind race as to how he was going to tell Nova. He thought about his last mission as to when he was gone. She had an affair with his best friend. This was going to be a year away from the kids and her. Will she be able to handle him gone for that length of time? To top it all off he was escorting Mei, what was he going to do? He gazed at her picture that sat on his desk and touch it with his finger when the phone rang. He picked up the phone and answered. “Captain Wildstar.”
“Hello Captain,” he heard her purr. “I hear you will be escorting me around for a year.”
“Hello Mei, I guess I am. Sorry you probably had someone else in mind.”
“Actually I was hoping that we would work together, but I wasn’t figuring a whole year.”
“Yeah well, you will have your own ship. I will only be an escort ship. We probably won’t even see each other much. Will your father be on board also?”
“No he has too much to do here on Earth. I will be going solo this time around.”
“I guess we need to talk soon, but right now I have to go and break the news to Nova.”
“I understand, yes we will talk. I’m sorry about the year.” She said. He hung up and took a long deep breath. He packed up his briefcase, grabbed his cover and walked out the door.
Within the hour he was heading home and trying to think of a way to tell his wife. He pulled up to the house and sat in his car for a long time. He stared at his little home that he bought for them. It was a new beginning for them, a returning hope that he had when they got back together. He took a deep breath and got out of the car and walked into the house. From the distance he could hear Miku crying as Alex and DJ watch a show on TV. DJ jump up from the floor and ran to his father. “DAD!”
Wildstar picked up his son and held him tight. Alex stood up and watched as he thought that he saw a tear run down his face. Wildstar smiled at his oldest and asked. “Where’s your mother?”
“She’s in Miku’s room trying to get her to take a nap. Are you alright Dad?”
He ruffled his son hair and smiled, “just fine.” He told him and then walked to their daughter’s room. He knocked softly on the door and smiled at his wife. His daughter slept silently in her arms as she rocked her gently up and down. She put her finger on her lips and slowly put their daughter into her crib. Derek looked down and touched her soft smooth face. Derek gave Nova a stare and nodded out the door. She could tell that something was up and what he would tell her wasn’t good. He took his wife’s hand and led her to their room. He closed the door and took her into his arms and kissed her with passion. When they pulled away she was breathless. “I love you.” he told her.
“Give it to me straight.” She said as she sat on the bed.
Wildstar sat down next to her and took her hand in his. “I got orders today.”
“Well we knew that it would happen. When are you going and for how long?”
“I leave in two months.” He hesitated.
“In two months, I guess we need to start making up for future time. We need to be careful, don’t want to get pregnant and you not be here. How long will you be gone?”
He swallowed back and closed his eyes. “One year.” He said in low tone. Nova stared at him unsure to what she heard. Did he just say one whole year? “I’m really sorry baby. I thought it would be a few months here and there, but they figured if I passed on the last job they wanted to be sure I make up for it. Baby we should really talk about this more. It’s a whole year. I need to know that you will be alright here with the kids. Especially Miku, will she remember me?”
Nova took a deep breath and held back tears that wanted to fall. “She will always know who you are. You two have a special bond. A whole year?”
He nodded his head and put his arm around her. “We can do this. I’ll call every day. We’ll send messages to each other. I’ll push hard to get home on time. I love you.”
“I should get dinner started.” She said as she got up.
He pulled at her arm and brought her to him. “We can do this baby. I love you too much to lose you.” She threw her arms around him and cried on his shoulder. Derek held his wife tight as she cried in his arms. “Shh, baby, it’s going to be alright. We can do this I promise.” He lifted her face up to look at him and gave her the smile she loved. “I promise.”
She nodded her head and took a deep breath to stop from crying further. “You will call, Promise me.”
“Every chance I get.”
“How are we going to tell the kids?”
“After dinner, I don’t want them to mope all over dinner.”
Their sons sat in shock as their father announced what will be happening in 2 months. DJ asked thousands of questions about the ship and the fighters. Alex sat quietly in his chair while Nova started to clean up. “Will you see other enemy fighters, Dad?”
“I wouldn’t say enemy fighters. We are still in peace time and I hope that we will always be.” He explained to his son. “Now I know that you two will help your mother out with Miku. Alex you will be the man of the house until I get back. DJ you will listen to your brother, no talking back to him or your mother. I will try to call every day to check in on your studies. And when I get back, we all will be going on a nice little vacation.” He could sense his oldest son and smiled at him. He ruffled his hair and motioned him to follow him outside. “Sit down Alex.” He told him. His son sat up straight and waited for his father to talk. “How are you?”
“Okay,” he said.
“I know that this is really hard for you.”
“Dad, will you come back?”
He looked at his son and could see the confusion and stress on his sons face. “Alex I will always come for you guys. There nothing in the universe that will keep me from you, DJ, Miku and your mother. I love you all so much. I promise you I will come back.” He put his arm around his son and gave him a hug. “I need you to be strong Alexander. Your mother is going to need you. Can I count on you?”
He smiled at him as he called him sir. Something he stuck with since their last separation. It made him remember that they were his first priority in his life. “Come on lets go help your mother out.”
He made every second count while at home. He dotted over his wife and kids every chance he got. His time went quickly and the day came when he had to leave. There were tears in everyone’s eyes as they said their goodbyes. Derek walked up the gangway and waved back to them. Midway up he turned and ran down to them and swept Nova into his arms and kissed her one last time. “Please don’t cry Nov, you’re making this so hard to do.” He kissed her one last time and held her tight. “I love you so much. Stay strong and please wait for me.”
“I will.” He pushed her away and ran back to the ship. He turned one last time and waved before walking on to the ship. Nova turned to her sons and held her five month old daughter in her arms. “Come on, let’s go home.” She wiped the tears from her face and drove home with her children.
6th of June 2209
6 months into his mission he began to get restless. If anything he wished that their time would go faster. They made several stops in distance galaxies, meeting emperors, queens, and many other species of life. Mei made sure that they all knew who he was and presented him as THE Derek Wildstar of the Argo and Star Force. Throughout the universe he was already known as one of the star force members that defeated the Gamilon Empire. He would sit next to her at dinner tables quietly as she discussed their peace mission. At times she would try to bring him into the conversation with his experience on his trip to Iscandar. They asked him questions about the reclusive queen and her Earth husband. He would smile and tell them about his brother Alex. She encouraged him to speak with the diplomats that they like to hear about how he single handily destroyed the Gamilons. He would blush and explain that their mission was to save Earth and nothing more. Mei would go on to tell them how he took over the command of the Argo when Captain Avatar was no longer able to command her. He was a mere 20 years old. By the end of the night Wildstar was exhausted to call home and talk with his family. Their next stop was the Cygnus Galaxy a distant galaxy about 3200 light years away from their solar system. She called him ship to ship, “Derek, now remember their very primitive we have to assure them that we are there for peace.”
“I’m highly aware of that Mei, I’ll see you in a couple of hours.” He hung up and looked at the picture of his wife and children. He smiled to himself thinking that they were half way there. In another five months he will be home. He tried to call home again but the distance was making it impossible. It’s been weeks since he was able to get through. He was growing weary of getting through and it showed in his work. At times he would catch himself snapping at someone for minor mistakes. He soon would apologize and tried to move on. Mei would call him at night and they would talk for an hour before going to bed. She made him laugh and they prepared for the next galaxy. He went over his work for a few hours more before heading to the Cosmo hound and over to her vessel. He was met by her assistant that walked him back to her cabin. She sat behind her desk as she finished talking to someone on her monitor. She gave him a smirk and told them she had to leave. She got up and walked over to him. “Good evening Mei,”
“Derek, I was just talking to the Cygnus ambassador. He will be expecting us tomorrow. I think we should go over how to handle our arrival. I ordered dinner, would you like something to drink.”
He nodded his head and said. “No thanks, I can’t drink on duty. Anyway I don’t like to drink period. It never agrees with me in the end.”
“Sorry to hear that. I guess I’ll be drinking alone.” She poured her a glass of wine and sat down on a long couch that she brought from home. Her cabin was a mixed of modern and ecliptic furniture. She crossed her lean athletic legs and patted for him to sit. “Ambassador Kurgon will be meeting us on planet Dozal with his escort. I’ve heard that they can be, how shall I put this, hostel to others. But I know that you will be able to negotiate something with them.”
“I’m not here to negotiate that’s your job. I am only here as an escort in case shit happens.” He said annoyed.
She laughed and said. “Are you trying to tell me that if something happens to me you will not negotiate for my life?”
“That’s a different story,” he said.
“Hmm, so I will have to get kidnap in order for you to take me in your arms?”
Wildstar looked at her with concern. She wasn’t playing fair. It was the minute they set off that she was coming on to him. He tried to put boundaries between them but she seemed to push the elements of working together. At first he thought it funny considering their past but she seemed to push a little further each time. Every night that he spoke to Nova he knew that he had to stay faithful. He would lose his wife and children. But without communication with Earth it was getting harder to stay faithful. It’s been over two months since he spoke to his wife and kids and he missed them terribly. To touch his wife and make love to her was something he long for. He missed out in seeing his daughter grow. The last picture of her was also sent months ago. He had no clue as to what she looks like now. He had no contact with them and it was driving him crazy. He missed them so much. Mei moved closer to him and he could smell her perfume and he could feel her breathing on his neck. Each time he moved away she would move closer. She talked about something he couldn’t understand, her perfume was too strong to concentrate on what she was saying. “I should go, I have to get up in the morning and run a ship not to mention a small fleet. I will let you know when we will be at Dozal in the morning. Goodnight Mei.” He stood up and put his cover on and headed to the door.
“Goodnight Derek,” she said in disappointment.
16th of March, 2209
Nova’s day was growing to a close, she finally settle into bed and opened a book. Miku was fast asleep and sleeping through the night. She returned back to EDF temporary then to work at the hospital. Her hours would have been longer and she wouldn’t be home for their children. But soon it became hectic and there was so many red tape to go through with ships she hated heading into work. Her only joy was with her children. She wanted to keep busy but made sure she was home in time to see her sons home. She brought Miku with her to work, considering she was still only 11 months old. She set up a little play area for her in her office with a traveling play pen for her to nap in. She hadn’t heard from her husband in months and she felt the loneliness at night the most. She would look up into the night sky and wonder where he was. Each time a star twinkled into the night she would think it was him encouraging her that he would be home soon and with her again. Alex could tell when she missed him the most and tried to cheer her up making her laugh. He would tell her about his day as they played with Miku. DJ would run around the yard pertaining that he was flying in his father’s fighter. He would ask her about his father and has she heard from him. She would smile at him and explain ‘it’s not easy Alex, our communication can only reach so far. If he is out of the solar system it’s pretty hard to call home when he wants. I know that if he could he would.’ As it was she would step into the communication room and see if they heard from the Argo and its fleet. Each day they would tell her the same. Nothing. She read her book and finally felt her eyes grow tired from the day. She closed the book and drifted off to a much needed nights rest.
Her mornings were also crazy with sending off their boys to school while she packed up Miku’s things in a bag and head out to work. She settled her daughter down and began her morning calls before going over reports to hand over to her superiors. Sandor walked into her office and smiled. “Hello Nova, how’s it going today?”
“Stephen how are you?” she ran to him and hugged him. “I haven’t seen you in weeks, where have you been?”
“In space.” He said then reached into his pocket and pulled an envelope out. “I have something for you. It’s seen better days. But it has found its way home.” He smiled as he handed it to her.
She tore at the envelope almost ripping its contents inside and sat down to read it.
My Dearest Nova,
Gosh I miss you so much. Every night I think of you and the kids. Mostly you though. I’m sorry I haven’t been able to call, communications isn’t the best out here in space. I’m okay and missing you. I hope when you finally get this I will be able to speak to you soon. Gosh this is so hard without you. How is Alex and DJ? They probably are both so big by now. And our dear Miku, I missed so much of her life. Her first crawl, her first steps. She is probably as beautiful as you are. I miss your lips and how they taste on mine. I am counting the days until we are together again and I hope that this will be my last sail for a long time. Please stay strong and I beg that you wait for me. My love for you will never change and pray that you still feel the same way. I love you and pray that this time will go fast.
With all my love
She cried as she read it and Sandor put his arms around her and let her cry on his shoulder. “He’s still alive.”
He laughed at what she said, “Did you think he was dead?”
“I haven’t heard from him in months. I didn’t know what to think. At least now I can tell the boys that he is okay and misses them.”
“I’m glad I was able to bring you some news.”
“Did you see him, how does he look, is he eating?”
He smiled and shook his head, no. “I ran into Contrail, he was on the Galaxy. They ran into one another and he gave him the letter to bring to you. I was heading home sooner and he gave it to me to give to you. He figured that it would be news you got sooner than waiting on him to get here.” He looked over to where Miku slept and walked over to get a closer look. “She’s getting so big Nova. He’s not going to recognized her when he gets home.”
She gave her daughter a soothing motherly look and smiled. “I don’t think he will. He is going to just fall deeply in love with her again”
“How are the boys dealing with this?”
“They’re doing good with it. Alex seems to be proud that his father is working at a job he loves. He is the one that Derek will not recognize. Even though he looks like him, he is all grown up.”
“How about lunch?” Sandor asked. “I’m sure you could use some time away from here. I know how this place can suck the life out of you.”
He took her to a nice restaurant in a classy part of town. They talked about their lives as Miku played with her food in a high chair they set for her at the table. Sandor made her laugh as he made funny face at her. Nova clapped each time she laughed and encouraged her to clap with her. It was a lovely day as they walked around the area talking when he ran into her. He smiled wide and introduced them. “Nova this is the real reason I wanted us to have lunch. This is Yvette, Yvey, Ortiz. Baby this is The Nova Wildstar.”
Nova smiled and gave her a hug. She was glad to see someone in her friend’s life. For a while she thought he would die and old lonely man. She was very pretty and petite. Sandor looked like a giant next to her and she a little girl. Nova could see she was head over heels over him and her directness made Nova know she wasn’t taking him for his money. She truly adored him. Yvey, fussed over Miku and said she one day would love a child of her own. Yvey was in EDF as a fighter pilot and Sandor announced with pride that she was one of the top fighters in the force. She was young and spunky, never holding back what was on her mind. By the end of the afternoon, she had to leave for work and Nova wish her a good day. “I like her Stephen. You seem very happy. It’s not like you to bring a woman around us often, is this serious?”
He blushed and looked away, “I think so. But we will see.”
She gave him a nudge on the shoulder and said, “It was wonderful to see you again. Thank you for bringing me his letter. The boys are going to be excited that I heard from him.” She kissed him on the cheek and headed back to work with her daughter in tow.

They arrived on Dozal and stood in front of a group of men that surrounded Ambassador Krugon. He stepped forward and Mei curtsey to him as Wildstar stood a step behind her. He sized him up and watched as Wildstar gave him a bow as respect. “It’s an honor to meet such a famous Captain.” He said.
Mei smiled and pulled him closer to her. She slipped her arm through his and said. “Captain Wildstar this is Ambassador Krugon. Ambassador Krugon this is The Captain Wildstar.”
They both shook hands and Wildstar said. “It’s an honor Mr. Ambassador.”
“Madam Ambassador has mentioned you with high remarks. Plus the fact that you and your crew rid the universe of such and evil villain makes it more of an honor.”
Wildstar blushed and felt uncomfortable as to what Mei has been promoting. He nodded his head and moved her closer to Krugon. He would deal with her once this was over. He hated being used like a puppet. He lean over to her and whispered in her direction, “We will talk about this later.”
She talked with the Ambassador through dinner and Krugon listen then began to ask Wildstar questions about his time in space. He never like dealing with the female species. Women were too much of a complication to head important status as being an ambassador. He would rather speak to a plant. Eventually Mei sat back and let the men talk battle stories and war ships. By the end of the night Wildstar wanted to get some rest. They all stood up and Krugon escorted them back to their shuttle.
“It was a great honor Captain. I will speak to my emperor and we will send word to a peace treaty.”
“Thank you Ambassador it was also an honor for me. All the best to you and your emperor.” He shook his hand and turned to leave. Mei watched as Krugon shook hands and didn’t acknowledge her since they arrived. Once back on the ship Wildstar bid her good night and began to walk to his shuttle to head back to his ship.
“Captain Wildstar, can I have a word with you, please.” She asked. He nodded his head and followed her back to her quarters. Wildstar stood at attention and she took off her shawl. “I see that he was a male chauvinist pig. I’m glad you were there to run interference. I guess my presence would have been awkward had you not been there.”
“I’m glad to be of some help. Now if you don’t mind I am pretty beat and would like to get some rest. We leave first thing in the morning to our next destination.”
“Derek why are you so cold. Since we left the only time your fun is when we are on the phone, but when we are face to face it’s all business with you. Are you afraid of me?”
“Hardly, and I would appreciate it if you keep me off the pedestal. It makes me feel uncomfortable.”
“But you saw how they respond to you more. We have a magic that can save the universe.” She walked a circle around him and ran her finger over his shoulders. “I have the connection and you have the fame. You may not know it but you are very famous throughout the galaxies.”
“But you seem to not understand I don’t want to be a puppet and showcase. That isn’t me.” He said.
She put her arms around his neck and pressed her body against his. “I understand. I will reframe from pushing you in the lime light from now on.” She purred.
He took her hands from around his neck and gently pushed her away. “Good night Mei, I will have my communication officer send over the coordinates to our next stop.” He turned and walked out the door and back to his shuttle to go to his ship.
He was awakened by a buzzing sound and then a loud banging on the door. He sat up in bed and rubbed his face. “WHO THE HELL IS IT!” he yelled out.
“Sir, Commander O’Hara.”
Wildstar got up and put on his pants. He swung opened the door his third in command stood in front of him with a stress look. “What is it?”
“We have a situation.”
He waved him into his quarters and searched for a shirt. “What’s the situation?”
“Ambassador Katamoto has been taken hostage.”
He thought he was still asleep. He shook his head thinking he would wake up. “What do you mean she was taken hostage? I left her on her ship hours ago. How did this happen.” He said as he hurried to dress.
“I’m not sure. From what her captain has told us she took a shuttle shortly after you left her ship to speak further with Krugon. What happen after that we are not sure.”
He grabbed his cover and headed out the door with O’Hara. Walking onto the bridge he ordered, “Get me a connection to planet Dozal, NOW!” He waited until Krugon face showed on the screen.
“Captain Wildstar, I do not understand why you Earthlings tend to push issues. To send a woman to tug on bleeding hearts is not what fighting men do. I thought you were a man of honor. Your woman should have kept to simply looking beautiful.”
“Where is she?” Wildstar asked.
“She’s here,” he pulled her into the screen and Wildstar rolled his eyes.
“I’ll be right down. No escorts, just me.” He told Krugon. He ordered to shut the screen and O’Hara stopped him.
“You can’t go down there alone. No telling what they are capable of doing” his third in command said.
“My word is my only way of getting her back safe. Give me an hour. If I am not back by then leave.”
“You heard my order. This ship and its crew are more important. If there is a hostel situation its best to have you go back and inform Earth of the possibilities that there could be a hostel in the area. Now have the flight pad get my ship ready.” Wildstar flew down to the planet and landed. There stood four armed guards waiting for him. They search him and his ship then escorted him to Ambassador Krugon. Once again he was searched and looked around the room. “I’m here, you can let her go.”
“Why would I do that? She landed here without permission. She is lucky we didn’t shoot her down.”
Wildstar walked over to a chair, “may I?” he asked. Krugon took the chair across from him and they both sat. “So, what do you intend to do with her?”
“Oh I don’t know. Sell her to some alien race far from here. I can see she is a big pain in the ass.”
Wildstar laughed and figure it was best to play along. “Tell you what, I can take her off your hands and let me deal with her. I gave you my word when I said I would come here unescorted and as you can see I am unarmed. My word and honor is all I have. I’m not going to blow smoke up your ass I know she is a big pain I have to escort her for a whole year and I would love to get rid of her. But this is not the way I want to do it. Unfortunate for me I have to return her back to her father. Krugon, can I call you Krugon.” He nodded his head to agree. “I totally understand your culture and women, how shall we put this, should have their place.” He said and thought how Nova would react to him saving that and thought she would laugh to his charade. “I agree with you one hundred percent. But you know women love to make things out of nothing. Are you married?”
“To the same woman for 30 years.”
“Well then you know what I am talking about. They get emotional to what they believe in. Us men, we tend to think things through and then we make the proper decision.”
“I agree, that is why men rule better than women. So what is it that you want me to do?”
“Just give her to me. We are leaving in the morning and you will not have to deal with her again. I will handle what needs to be done. She will be punish I promise.”
“Hmm, it would relieve me of her. She can be a royal pain. Very well I will let her go. But if she comes here unwanted again she will be shot on sight.”
“Understood, thank you for your cooperation, sir. I will not forget this.” They shook hands and Krugon ordered his guard to bring her to them. She ran into his arms as tears ran down her face.
“Oh Derek,” she cried.
“Shut up and let’s go.” He ordered her. His anger caught her off guard and she stayed quiet. He guided her back to his ship and took off. “Are you out of you mind!” he snapped at her.
“I’m sorry I just thought that he didn’t hear me about peace. I was only trying to do my job.”
“And it’s my job to keep you safe. You should have told me.”
“I have a job to do and he wasn’t listening to what I was saying.”
“Obviously it should have gone through that thick head of yours. He doesn’t like talking to women. His culture only deals with men.”
“But that is barbaric!”
“Barbaric it may be, but it’s how they run things. And you pushing something down their throat only pissed them off. Nova would have known that the minute she met him!”
“I am not your wife!”
“I know that. Just thank your lucky stars that I got him to release you.” He yelled. They rode the rest of the way back in silence, both fuming to each other comments. He landed the ship and she raced off to her room. Wildstar followed quickly behind. He wasn’t finished scolding her about her stupid stunt. He opened her door and slammed it hard, “if you ever do that again, I will have both ships turn around and go back to Earth. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME!”
“I am not a child! You are supposed to take orders from me. Not me take orders from you.”
“When it comes to your safety and the safety of every man and woman in this fleet, you will take orders from me!”
Tears of anger ran down her face and she picked up a book and through it at him. Ducking quickly to avoid it hitting him, he grabbed her by her arm and squeezed tight. She looked into his eyes shocked. Without thinking she kissed him. Wildstar pushed away unsure of what to do. His lips wanted her, the feel of her body on him made him burn for his wife. She held him closer, tighter he stared into her blue eyes as she lean closer to him. Before he could stop himself he was kissing her back and they fell on her bed.
He woke up and the guilt washed over him in full force. He quietly dressed and left her sleeping. He flew back to his ship and went straight to his quarters and changed into a fresh uniform. It was an hour before he had to get to the bridge and he sat at his desk looking out into the dark sky. How was he going to face his wife when they returned back to Earth? His hands shook and he wanted this day to be over before it even started. Sitting there thinking of what happened just made him more nervous. He got up and headed to the bridge. The bridge crew stood to attention as he walked on and he announced for all to get back to work. He sat at his chair looking over them as they moved from station to station going over instruments. He heard them call to each other their status and tried to think about when he was once in their shoes. As head tactical officer he held a lot of responsibilities to his crew. Now he felt more pressure with a larger crew and more ships to command. His communications officer walked up to him and said in a low tone. “Sir, Ambassador Katamoto would like to speak to you in private. She is on line 2. Would you like to take it in your quarters?”
“Yes that would be fine. Give me five minutes.” He pressed the lever to his chair and rode up to his quarters in his chair lift. He called down and told them to put it through. It rang four times before he picked it up. “Hello.”
“Good morning Captain Wildstar. I wasn’t expecting to wake up alone this morning.”
“Listen Mei, what happen last night was a huge mistake. Let’s just move on, okay.”
“I really don’t think it was a mistake Derek, how you touched me and it seem like you needed me as much as I needed you. Last night,”
“Mei, I can’t talk right now. I have to get back on the bridge.”
“I have to go.” He hung up and went to work. She left several messages for him but he continued to ignore it and work. By the end of the day he was left with his thoughts about how he would tell Nova. He sat on his bed and cried knowing that if she found out that his marriage would be over. ‘She can never know about it,’ he thought. ‘It was one time, she cheated on you with your best friend as far as I am concerned we are even. It’s best to just never let her know.’ He went back and forth in his head about what happened and if Nova will ever find out. Mei knocked on his hatch and waited until he called out to enter. She peek into his room and gave him a smile.
“Derek, can I come in?”
“Mei what are you doing here?” he jumped from his thoughts.
“Well you haven’t returned my calls so I figured I fly over and see about dinner.”
“Mei I’m not really hunger and I should deal with some reports I’ve been putting off, maybe another time.”
She walked over to him and sat on his window ledge in front of him. “You need to eat to keep your strength up. Why don’t I call down to your mess hall and have them send something up to eat.” She picked up the phone and called down. Within the hour they brought them dinner. She dressed up the table and took hold of his hand. “Let’s eat.” She talked on about what happened and he sat and listened. She kept telling him how grateful she was that he came to save her. His mind drifted to their night together and the guilt that he felt. He hoped that she would never find out. She called out to him and he looked up. “Derek you’re a million miles away.”
“Sorry just a little tired. I should get some rest. Last night was,” he trailed off.
“Was amazing, I forgot how great of a lover you are.” She stood up and walked behind him. She started to rub his shoulder and could feel the tension in him. “You really have to relax Derek.”
“Stop it Mei. I am a married man.”
She leaned down to his ear and purred into it. “You weren’t last night.”
He jump up from his chair and took her by the arm. “You have to go. And you have to go now.”
She shook his arm off her and said. “You know it’s what you want. So let’s not play games.”
“Look what happened last night was a big mistake so let’s just get on with our lives and move on.”
She stepped closer to him and took hold of his collar. His heart pounded hard in his chest and she looked down to his chest. “Do I make you nervous?” she said softly. She slipped her other arm around his neck and pulled him closer to her. Her lips were close and he felt her breath on his. She kissed him gently and then slowly kissed him longer and harder. He couldn’t explain how they wind up on his bed naked and making love. Their love affair went on up to the month of their returned. Each time he tried to stop it she pushed harder. What was he going to do with her once he returned to Earth?

Nova watched as Alex and DJ ran off the bus. She noticed it the minute he got off. Her heart almost stopped. “Alexander what happened to you?” she asked with worry. Alexander Wildstar walked off the bus with a black eye and a blood stain shirt. She picked up his face and asked him again. “What happened?”
Alex looked at his brother and said. “Give them to her.”
“No Alex, Daddy, we have to ask Daddy.” DJ said.
“DJ show them to her!” he yelled at his brother.
“Show me what?” Nova asked confused. What could possibly be this bad that he got into a fight? DJ dug deep into his backpack and pulled out a Magazine. She opened it up and found his face on the front page with the Ambassadors daughter kissing. Nova’s heart almost stopped and couldn’t speak.
“Mom who is she with him.” Alex asked.
Nova swallowed back her anger and pain and gave him a smile. “Alex sweetheart you know the press is always trying to make something out of nothing. I am sure your father has a good explanation about this. Is that why you have this,” She touched his face and wanted to cry for him.
“They said that he is sleeping with her. That this was not the only paper that has picture of him and her.”
“Oh Alex I really don’t think it’s anything to what they are saying, so go inside and clean up. I’ll get you a cold patch for that eye. DJ go do your homework.” She wondered if the photos were true, could he be sleeping with her. She walked into the house and began her day with her children. Alex stayed quiet most of the time and Nova watched as he withdrew from their regular activities from school. After putting her children to bed she sat on her patio looking up at the stars. She felt a gut wrenching turn in her stomach and she couldn’t shake the ill feeling of being betrayed. Her night was restless and she called in sick for the first time since her return back to EDF. She put her sons on the bus and went back into the house. She went straight to his office and opened his laptop. Her fingers jumped on the keys and began a search on her husband. Photo’s popped up on the screen with him and her in unfaltering positions. She dressed quickly and grabbed her daughter and placed her in the car. She drove into town and stopped at a newsstand. She looked at all the magazines and saw his face and hers plaster all over them. She didn’t want it to be true but his finger had his wedding ring on and she knew it was true. Many blurred out the positions he was in. Her face turned red with anger and she went home and made the call. Hours later the phone rang and she heard Sandor voice on the other end. “Hello, Sandor.”
“Nova, how are you?”
She was numb from what she saw and she felt like her life was in a daze. “Okay I guess. I’ve already started procedures and I am looking for another place to live. I guess he doesn’t know that it has hit Earth. I just don’t know where to go. Alex and DJ came home with a clipping of him and her. I have to protect the children. I have to get them out of school and do something to protect them.” She babbled trying to hold back her tears.
“I can help you find another place and there is a little town that is pretty much secluded from the rest of the island.”
“Thank you Sandor.” She drifted off her words and then asked him, “What did I do wrong. I just don’t know what I did? He asked me to wait for him and now I don’t know what I did wrong for him to do this to me. TO US!”
He wanted to reach through the phone and hold her. She didn’t deserve this, to be humiliated like this. Venture called from the states fuming about the photographs that were all over the papers. He told him he was getting on the next flight back to Great Island and Sandor told him to stay where he was at. He would take care of everything. She was like a little sister and this was killing him to see her marriage fall apart. “Nova if there’s anything you need I’m here for you.”
“Thank you Sandor, I just have to figure out what I need to do. I don’t want to see him ever again. I already talked to my father. He is already starting the divorce decree before I even called. I should go; I need to look for another place. I don’t want to be here when he comes back.”
“I’ll call a friend and get you some listings in the area. I’ll send it over as soon as I can.”
“Thank you.” and she hung up without another word.
