Nurse Misa

Another Star Blazers/Death Note tale by AMI MEITSU

A/N: Niara, Mashiro and their children all come from my other story “A Prince and a Father” as does their planet, Rikealla

It was the middle of the afternoon, and a pretty good day, but it was cold. Rikealla wasn’t the type of place to visit in the winter, it was a little like Earth but it was freezing in the winter, and that’s how Invidia felt while walking.

“Father I’m cold!” Invidia whined, she was shivering a little, even under the black coat she wore.

“I know that, Invidia, we just came from outside, and it will warm up.” Zordar told her.

“Why did we come here?” Invidia asked.

“To meet again with Niara and Mashiro, and possibly update our agreement.”

“Why couldn’t they come to us?”

“They already did, it’s our turn now.”

Invidia just groaned as she followed her Father down the hall and into a meeting room, where, Nina, Mashiro and the children were waiting.

“Welcome to our planet,” they said.

“It’s cold! What kind of welcome is that?!” Invidia snapped.

“Invidia!” Zordar scolded as he pulled her back. “She’s just cold and tired from the trip.”

“Oh, well take some time to get settled in and we’ll see you at dinner, okay?” Mashiro said.

“Right.” Zordar nodded and lead Invidia out of the room, and up to where their rooms were.

“Well…” Invidia looked at her room. “It’s less extravagant then my suite, but it’ll do.”

“Invidia, don’t be so picky and rude, what you said back there was unacceptable.”

“But Daddy…” Invidia whined, she usually whined like that to get out of trouble by being cute.

“Don’t you ‘But daddy…’ me! You know you were rude, just because you’re upset, don’t take it out on them.”

“Fine…” Invidia muttered as she took off her coat and boots. “Can I go to sleep now?”

“Sure, I’ll wake you up when it’s time for dinner.”

“No! Earlier, I have to get dressed for dinner too.”

“All right, Princess.” Zordar hugged her. “I’ll see you later then.” He then kissed her head and left. As soon as he did Invidia fixed the bed so that she could sleep, and layed down until Zordar got her up for dinner, which was supposed be nice, but…

Invidia sat next to her Father and Hazuki sat next to her. Invidia didn’t care for Hazuki, she was sometimes a brat and Invidia didn’t really like little children anyway. In her view they were always sick, said nothing of value and were just plain annoying, but Hazuki was even more annoying now.

“You’re pretty.” She said to Invidia.

“You said that.” Invidia muttered.

“But you are, and Mama says so too…” It was then that Hazuki sneezed…three times, and then she coughed.

“Oh, gross!” Invidia said.

“I’m sorry.” Mashiro went over and gave Hazuki a tissue. “She’s getting over the flu, but it’s only a cold now.”

“Still gross! Keep her away from me! I don’t want to get sick!” Invidia said.

“Invidia, what did I say?” Zordar whispered to her.

“Don’t be rude?”

“Right, just do what you normally do; you’ll be fine, okay?”

“Right…” Invidia said…She wasn’t entirely sure, but she followed Zordar’s advice and did what she usually did and Hazuki followed her. She wouldn’t leave Invidia alone and went with her everywhere, sneezing and coughing along the way…

Invidia hated it; she thought that if she was sick she should stay away! Not carry her germs around, and the cold didn’t help either, needless to say, a week later, she was happy to leave the place when they went back, but, she wasn’t happy to come home to a messed up closet with Misa sitting in a pile of clothes…

“What did you do?!” Invidia snapped. “I was looking for clothes and more dress deigns…and you weren’t here so…” Misa tried to explain.

“That doesn’t mean you tear apart my closet! Fix it!” Invidia snapped. “No, you know what? I’ll fix it! Get out!” She pointed out the door. “But…”

“Get out.” Invidia hissed.

Misa left and Invidia began organizing her clothes again, but halfway through she realized that she couldn’t. Ever since she got home she’d been a little tired and run down, she figured that it was just a the trip, but it had gotten worse. ‘Maybe it was Hazuki? She was…No! Never! I am not getting sick! I’m fine! Just tired…’ Invidia thought, she layed down on the floor and looked at the ceiling with her head on one of her dresses, it was soft and she eventually fell asleep…

But when she woke up, she wasn’t in her closet anymore; she was on her bed with a black blanket, her ‘blankie’, over her, and someone had taken her dress off, leaving her in a slip. She sat up in the dark room and glanced at her clock.

“Eight o’clock?!” She said. “I missed dinner…I…Shamura!” She called, but Shamura didn’t come. ‘Where is she? And where’s Father? He usually wakes me up for dinner…’ Invidia then got up and threw her robe on as she headed down the hall to her Father’s own suite, he was in his sitting room.

“Father?” Invidia said when she came in.

“Hm?”

“Why didn’t you wake me up for dinner? I’m hungry…” She whined.

“Shamura said not to, you looked peaceful and she said you were tired and needed some rest.”

“Where is she?”

“Since you were asleep…”

“You sent her home, didn’t you?!” Invidia snapped with tears in her eyes. “I need her!”

“No, I sent her to pick something up for me, okay?” Zordar got up. “Now stay here, I’m going see if I can get you something to eat, okay?”

“I’m hungry, but not enough for something big, maybe you could just get me a salad or something.”

“Okay.” Zordar kissed her head. “I’ll be back, you just relax, Princess.”

Invidia nodded, then she sat on one of the couches and, out of boredom she turned on the TV. She flipped channels until she found a movie that looked interesting and waited for her father to come back. When he did he handed her a tray with a small salad plate and a glass of water.

“This good?” He asked.

“It’s fine.” Invidia said as she began to eat.

“Princess?”

“Hm?”

“You don’t look good, are you okay?”

“Yes Father, I’m fine, don’t worry about it.”

“Are you sure? You look tired and a little paler than usual…” Zordar told her.

“I’m fine!” Invidia hissed.

“All right, all right…” Zordar backed off, but maybe he shouldn’t have. Over the next three days or so she got worse, up to the point that she couldn’t take it anymore, she didn’t even want to get up on the morning of an important staff meeting. Samara tried everything to drag her out of bed but it wouldn’t work.

“Mistress, come on!” She said. “It’s important!”

“No!” Invidia snapped. “I can’t! I don’t feel well enough to go anywhere!”

“Are you sick?” Shamura asked.

“No.” Invidia said, half-lying, she sure felt sick… “I’m just tired…”

Shamura put her hand to Invidia’s head. “But you’re burning up, you are sick! Zordar!” She called.

“Yes?” Zordar asked when he came in.

“Look at your daughter! And talk some sense into her, she’s obviously sick!”

Zordar went over. “What’s wrong Princess?” He asked. “Are you not feeling well?”

“No.” Invidia admitted with slight tears in her eyes. “I’m hot and tired and my head hurts. I’m achy and I can barely breathe! I feel horrible!” Invidia admitted, then, she began to cry.

“Oh. Princess don’t cry.” Zordar hugged her and turned to Shamura. “Call her doctor up here and then run her bath would you? It’ll calm her down and it would help.”

“Right…” Shamura left and went to find a phone, but not before running into Misa and Light.

“Hey, what are you doing out here?” Misa asked.

“You’re usually with Invidia.” Light said.

“She’s sick.” Shamura said. “And I have to go make a call.” She ran off before she said anything else.

“She’s sick?” Misa repeated. “Poor Princess…I wanna help her!”

“Huh?”

“If I do maybe she’ll see more goodness in me! I’ll see you!” Misa waved to Light as she headed up to Invidia’s room, when she got there Invidia was laying with her head in her father’s lap as he ran his fingers gently through her hair and talked to her.

“Princess…” Misa said softly as she went over, she looked at Zordar. “What’s wrong with her?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Invidia looked up at her father, and ignored Misa for the moment. “I wish I knew…so I could…so…” She sneezed for the tenth time that morning, and looked like she was about to cry or had been crying, Misa couldn’t tell.

“You look horrible.” Misa said.

“Of course I do! I feel worse than I look! And shut up! Your voice is just irritating me!”

“Huh?” Misa looked hurt, Invidia was always snapping at her, but not like that.

“She’s just upset.” Zordar said. “It’s not really you; she gets irritable when she’s sick.”

“Oh…” Misa just sat, and after a couple minutes Shamura came back with a man in a doctor’s coat and went into the bathroom. The man was Invidia’s normal doctor, Dr. Baisley, Invidia trusted him a lot, as a person and a doctor, unless he had to strip her, or give her shots. She looked at him and sat up as he came over.

“So what’s wrong with her?” He asked.

“She says that she’s hot and achy and her head hurts, she’s also got a cough and she’s sneezing a lot, and she complains that she can’t breathe.”

“Hmm…” He went over and Invidia allowed him to put a thermometer in her mouth. Then he did the usual check of her heart and lungs before taking it out. “102.4?!” He read.

“That bad?” Invidia whined.

“Don’t whine, just open your mouth.” Dr. Baisley ordered. She did and he looked at her. “Well your throat is a bit red, and by the rest of your symptoms I’d say you have the flu.”

“No!” Invidia groaned. “I can’t…”

“Sorry hon, you’re gonna be in bed for a couple days.” And with that, Dr. Baisley left.

“But…I…” Invidia stuttered and began to cry again, only softer.

“Shush Honey.” Zordar hugged her and so did Misa. “Everyone gets sick, Princess, it’ll be okay,” Misa whispered.

“But where did I get this from?”

“Probably from Hazuki, she’s little and doesn’t really grasp the cover your mouth concept. And she did follow you around and touch your stuff a lot.”

“That little brat!” Invidia said.

“Just shush, and get in the bath, I think Shamura’s waiting…” Zordar said as he and Misa let go. “And I have a meeting to go to.” He left and Misa followed as Invidia went into the bathroom. And Misa? She left Invidia alone for the rest of the day while she thought of things to make her better, then, the next evening she started with Tamaro helping her a bit in making soup and taking it to Invidia. Misa did so because that’s what her mother did when she was little, she even added a little bit of hot sauce to it. Just a drop or two and it would clear her right up so that she could breathe. And, luckily Invidia was on her bed in the long black nightgown Shamura had given her, when Misa and Tamaro came up, Tamaro presented her with a couple flowers and her ‘blankie’ which she washed as a favor.

“What’s this for?” Invidia asked, she didn’t argue with them, she was too sick to do so…

“To help you get better!” Misa said. “I got you something to eat! My mama used to do it for me.”

“And your blanket needed to be washed.” Tamaro said. “I did it because you like sleeping with it.”

“Thanks…” Invidia muttered, she took the tray from Misa and slowly began to eat.

“This is different…” She said after a minute. “What is it?”

“Just some soup, with a tiny bit of hot sauce, my mama did it and it cleared me up so I could breathe.”

“No not that it tastes different then what’s usually made for me.”

“Uh…it’s condensed, Princess, I can only make canned soup.”

“What?!” Invidia pushed the tray back. “No! I can’t eat this stuff! I can’t stomach it, it makes me feel sick!” She said

“Oh, well…”

“I told you that!” Tamaro said. “You didn’t listen.”

“Uh…” Misa said nothing, but they stayed for a couple more minutes.

“I hate you…” Invidia said, she felt worse than before, and it wasn’t the normal feeling she got from eating condensed stuff, it was ten times worse, and Invidia knew something was bound to happen from it. She slowly got up and kind of dragged herself into her smaller bathroom; it was more standard with a shower and stuff, there, she dropped to the floor, breathing hard.

“Mistress, are you okay?” Shamura asked when she came in.

Invidia shook her head, and she gagged once.

Shamura took the cue and got behind her, she pulled her hair back as Invidia leaned forward and coughed up everything she had eaten that day into the toilet. She hated it, it was disgusting and it just made her feel worse. And after it was all over, she burst into tears, just as she always did when she ‘got sick.’ Shamura just held her, and she didn’t blame her for crying, she would too. Shamura, like Invidia (And the authoress) had certain views about that sort of thing, they didn’t like seeing, doing, or hearing about it. It was just gross.

“Shush…” She said, as she tried to console Invidia. “It’s all right…”

“No it’s not! It’s just horrible! I hate this!” Invidia cried as she clung to Shamura, who held her close and just let her cry.

Meanwhile Misa and Tamaro stood in Invidia’s bedroom still. “So…” Tamaro started. “You made her throw up.”

“Shut up.” Misa said, then she walked out of the room. ‘I’m sorry!’ She thought, as she went back to her room. ‘I just have to try something that’ll help…Oh! I know!’ She then got out a CD she had.And the next morning she went to see Invidia again, after she gave her a card to say she was sorry for what she did, and after wondering why Tamaro didn’t tell her that would happen. When she came in Zordar had Invidia in his lap, he was trying to get her to drink some kind of medicine and she was being stubborn.

“Look, Invidia, stop being a baby, just drink it.” Zordar said.

Invidia turned her head with a ‘humph.’

“Princess…”

“No!”

He took that opportunity to shove the spoon in her mouth; she just swallowed it, then she glared at her father.

“It was either that or a shot.”

“This is fine!” Invidia said quickly.

“I thought so.” Zordar said, he held her closer and she looked up at him.

“What?”

“You know what?”

He handed her the blanket and she held it to keep her comfortable.

“Aw, you’re so cute…” He kissed her head.

“Aren’t you worried I’m gonna make you sick?” Invidia asked.

“No, if I kiss you on the head it’ll be fine, and you’re still pretty clean when you’re sick.”

“Oh.” Invidia said.

He then stood up and put her back on the bed. “I’ll be back but I have something do, okay?”

Invidia nodded and he left, as soon as he did Misa came in. “Hi.” She said.

“Oh, you.” Invidia said.

“Did you…?”

“I got your card, thank you. And Tamaro told me you didn’t know; just listen to her next time!”

“Right…I got you something.” Misa gave her a plate with a teacup on it. “It’s a special tea, like my Mama used to make and its okay you can drink it, just do it slowly.”

Invidia looked at it but she did drink it, it was good and it had a hint of mint in it and it made her feel better, it warmed her up and she realized that she could breathe better.

“And I worked on this…” Misa took a deep breath and began to sing, Invidia recognized it.

“That’s…Mama’s song…” Invidia then began to softly follow along hitting each verse perfectly.

Afterwards she looked at Misa. “You…know the song?”

“I listened and studied it, I wanted to make things up to you. And you just wait I’ve got more things!” Misa then left the room. She came back the next day with more soup, the chef made it but Misa added the sauce to it and it really helped, and Misa found that she liked helping and being useful. Especially since she knew how bad being sick could get, she just wanted to make Invidia better and really helped when Zordar couldn’t be there. And when he was she just sat around until she was needed, and even though she hated thinking it she was a little glad Invidia was too tired to argue with her. About two days later Misa came in when Invidia was sitting with her Father and Shamura, at about eleven o’clock.

She sat in front of Zordar as he rocked her in an attempt to get her to sleep. “Come on princess…go na-night.” He whispered.

Invidia just sat there and let herself be rocked. “I’m not really tired…” She said.

“Come on, you’re sick and you need rest…” Shamura said. She gave Invidia the blanket. “Come on! Cuddle your blankie and go to sleep.”

“It’s not a blankie.” Invidia said, even though she knew it was true.

“Sing to her.” Misa said.

“I tried.” Shamura said. “I don’t know all the words And I can’t find Sabera’s recording! That soothes her.”

“What about something like ocean waves?”

“I’ll feel seasick.” Invidia said.

“Oh well…hold on.” Misa went back to her room as fast as she could and came back with her copy of the song. “Here, use mine.”

Shamura put it in and Zordar pulled Invidia into his lap.

“Why does such dark music calm her anyway?” Tamaro asked, she had been in the room for awhile.

“It’s because it’s her mother’s song.” Zordar said. “She likes Sabera’s voice, right?”

Invidia nodded. “It used to work when I was a baby too…back then I just liked Mama’s voice.”

“You still do.” Zordar said.

Invidia said nothing else, she just listened to the music as it slowly began to lull her to sleep. Zordar sighed and laid her down. “I love you Princess…” He said.

“I love you too…” Invidia said as she snuggled down into her blankets, she layed her head on her ‘blankie and let the rest of it cover her as she began to fall asleep.

“Finally…” Shamura said.

“So how’s she doing anyway?” Misa asked.

“Fine. She’s getting better and it’s turning into a small cold, she’ll be fine in a couple days.”

“Okay.” Misa said as they all left the room. “Wait you two…” Invidia called to Tamaro and Misa.

“Hm?” They went over.

“Thank you…” She whispered. “For helping me…Misa, you’ve proved you can be good even if I still don’t care for you that much, but you can be helpful, that’s worth something.”

“Thanks.” Misa said. “Night.”

Invidia said nothing, she just laid back down. ‘I’ll find a way to thank them…’ She thought. ‘It’s amazing that she has some goodness in her…that earns some trust…’ Invidia thought as she fell into a deep sleep. There were no more thoughts and no more dreams that night.
