Misa’s Present

Another Death Note/Star Blazers tale by AMI MEITSU

It was near the middle of the afternoon and Misa was busy in the kitchen. Invidia always told her to stay out but she just couldn’t, especially not when she had to prove herself. She wanted to make Invidia like her just as she like Tamaro, but more than that, she was also busy baking for Light’s upcoming birthday. She hummed to herself as she mixed and added ingredients.

“Misa, isn’t that a little much?” Tamaro asked, she was next to Misa in the kitchen.

“Some of this is for Light and some of this is for me to please Invidia. I want her to treat me like she does you.” Misa explained.

“She treats me well because I’m calm, and I don’t get into things. I also help her sometimes, and I can keep her from getting hurt…”

“Well you are psychic; you can see trouble before it happens.”

“Yes, but that’s not why she gets along with me.”

“She gets along with you because you went and got her Daddy when she had a bad dream! I did that once and she still doesn’t like me!”

“Let’s see…you take her stuff, you go into the bathroom when she taking a bath, oh and you don’t exactly do that much for her…”

“Eh.” Misa shrugged as she continued with her baking.

Meanwhile, Invidia lay asleep in her bedroom. She had fallen asleep earlier after a long staff meeting, it had gone on longer than planned and was full of stupid arguments. As she slept, Shamura came in.

“Mistress?” She whispered as she lightly stroked Invidia’s face in an attempt to wake her up.“Come on, get up.”

“Hmm?” Invidia slowly began to open her eyes and looked up.

“Mistress, your Father needs you for another meeting, it’s kind of a sudden thing.”

“No!” Invidia whined. “Let him do it himself! I’m tired!” She rolled the other way and snuggled back down into her blankets.

“He needs you there too, I’m sorry but you have to get up.”

Invidia groaned but she slowly got up, rubbing her eyes while doing so.

“Good, here.” Shamura sat her shoes on the bed; she was still wearing her red gown.

“Thanks.” Invidia said as she got up and her gown fell back down to her feet.

“And, Mistress…your hair…”

“It’s messed up, isn’t it?”

“A little. Get back up on the bed.”

Invidia then got back up on the bed and Shamura got behind her with a hair brush as she slowly and softly began to brush Invidia’s hair out. She was always gentle and knew that Invidia hated having her hair pulled, she only trusted few people to do her hair, including her Father and Shamura. And, after about five minutes or so, Shamura stopped.

“There, perfect and silky smooth.” Shamura said.

“Thanks.” Invidia told her as she slipped into her black flats and left the room.

“Wait! Mistress, you have five minutes or so.” Shamura called.

“I know, I’m going to the kitchen, I need something to eat…” Invidia replied. ‘Something sweet…’ She thought as she headed down two flights of stairs to the kitchen, where, she found Misa and a mess. “What the hell is this?!” she asked.

“Oh, Hi.” Misa said.

“What are you doing?!”

“Baking! See?”

“You know what, I have a meeting to go to and I don’t care, just clean it up after you’re done.” Invidia then walked toward the shelf where they tried to keep the kren away from her by putting it on the top shelf, which she couldn’t reach well. But, she wasn’t paying attention to what was around her and slipped on some of the batter Misa had spilled. She fell and practically slammed into the counter. As soon as she did, one of the bowls on the counter fell, covering her in an unfinished batter of flour, water and egg, leaving her, a sticky, floury mess.

“Are you okay?” Misa asked.

“Do I look okay?!” Invidia snapped. “I mean, look at me!” She got up and went over to Misa. “Look what you did! You and your irresponsible bowl placing! You’re supposed to put them in the middle, and why the hell would you leave unfinished batter there in the first place unless you’re checking something?!”

“Well…I…I’m sorry.” Misa said. “I didn’t mean too, it just happened!”

“Whatever! Now, thanks to you, I have to go take a bath!” Invidia snapped before she left the kitchen.

She stomped back up to her room; luckily there was no one but her in the hall for the moment. “Shamura!” she called when she entered her room.

“Mistress, what happened?” Shamura asked.

“Misa happened! Her and her baking, just…run me a bath!”

“Yes, Mistress.”

Shamura left and Invidia picked up the phone that was in her room, she then connected it to Zordar.

“Invidia, what is it?” He asked when he answered. “I’m late and you are too.”

“I can’t go to the meeting, there was an accident in the kitchen and I have to take a bath and get cleaned up, I can’t come.”

“Is it…?”

“Yes, it’s that bad Father! If it wasn’t I wouldn’t have called you, just do it without me, okay?”

“Fine.” Zordar then hung up as Shamura came back out.

“It’s almost ready.” She said. “But you can get in now…”

“Good.” Invidia said as she fiddled with the pin in her hair. It came out and she followed Shamura into the bathroom.

“So…what are you going to do about Misa?”

“Nothing, it’s no use.” Invidia told her as she began to strip down. “But maybe I should make her owe me…”

“I don’t think she could give you anything you really want…” Shamura said as Invidia slipped into the bath, the warm water calmed her.

“True…”

“And if you punish them it doesn’t seem to help…” Shamura then went over to one of the shelves and picked up, a couple bottles and a cloth and handed them to Invidia. “Here.”

“Thanks.” Invidia then went one to where her waterfall was, it was easier to wash near it and made for an easy rinse. Though, it meant that Shamura couldn’t watch her, which made it hard to talk, so they just didn’t. Invidia checked back to make sure Shamura wasn’t looking, and only then did she start. She let the warm water wash over her, taking away the mess and her troubles as she ran her hands through her hair to get the shampoo out, it was something her father got for her and it made her smell like mint chocolate chip… Afterwards, she went back over to Shamura.

“Done?” Shamura asked when she heard the splashing.

“Yes.” Invidia said.

“I wonder…how your Father is doing with the meeting…”

“Who cares?” Invidia said as she pushed herself back. “I just wanna relax…”

“You don’t get that a lot, do you?”

“Nope.”

At the same time, after she had Light and Tamaro and Mello help her, Misa cleaned up her mess and went into her “room” which is what she called her furnished cell.

“What are you going to do?” Tamaro asked. “You have to make it up to her, don’t you…?” She then stepped out for a minute. “You might wanna get that!” she called to the guards, then, the phone rang.

“Just hold on.” Misa rummaged through her stuff until she found what she was looking for, a black dress she had never worn. She bought it because it was just like the dress she wore when she first met Light, she then found some more fabric, and a needle and thread she bought incase her clothes needed repair. “What are you doing?” Tamaro asked.

“Bringing out the skirt, giving it a little more length…I’m doing some modifications so Invidia can wear it, I wanna give it to her for a present, along with the brownies I made.”

“I was surprised that you could cook…”

“Well I lived on my own, I had to cook, and when I was little my mother taught me a recipe so I used it, you’ve tried them they’re good and Mello likes them because they’re chocolate.” Misa said as she pulled at the fabric, she did so for the next hour and a half.

While, back in her room, Invidia had finally come out of the bath, she sat in front of Shamura and Shamura busily blow dried and brushed her hair, then, she put the pin back in.

“There’s our pretty Princess!” She teased.

“You sound like Father!” Invidia laughed, her Father sometimes said things like that to her to tease her.

“All right, I won’t; now, you want me to bring your clothes in here or what?”

“No, just my robe, the long silken one, I told you I need to relax, and after you do that could you do me a favor and get me some of those cherries I like? And some ice water and bring them into my sitting room?”

“Sure.” Shamura went and got her robe and then, she went into the kitchen, as Invidia got up and went into her sitting room. She scanned her shelf and grabbed one of her books; it was a romance novel that Zordar picked up for her a couple days ago. She then went over to her couch and backed up against the pillows on one side. After a couple minutes Shamura came in and Invidia allowed her to sit around with her as Misa finished off her dress.

“Done!” She said to Tamaro.

“Are you sure she’ll wear it?”

“I at least want her to try it on.” Misa put it in a white box she had for her clothes, along with a choker that had a cross hanging off of it that went with the dress. She then sealed it with a red ribbon and grabbed a plate of the brownies. “Let’s go see her!” She said to Tamaro, and she followed.

They walked up about five flights of stairs before coming into Invidia’s bedroom, then her sitting room.

“Princess!” Misa called.

“Not her.” Invidia groaned she was relaxed and clam now, Misa would just ruin it. She had a tendency to sometimes make Invidia mad or annoyed, but she could be helpful.

“Hey!” She said as she came in.

“Invidia.” Tamaro bowed to her.

“Tamaro.” Invidia said as the girl went over and sat in a chair near the couch.

“I have something for you!” Misa said. First, she set the brownies down then she handed Invidia the box. “Go on! Open it!” She said.

“What’s all this for?” Shamura asked.

“To make up for the mess she was in.”

“This won’t explode, will it?” Invidia asked.

“No.”

Invidia sighed and pulled the ribbon off, and as she pulled the dress out her eyes widened.

“Heh…” She muttered nervously. “It’s nice…but…uh…”

“At least try it on! Please? I modified it for you…and you kinda need clothes” Misa said, she could tell that Invidia was wearing nothing more than her robe.

“Not now, maybe later…but for now, could you please go? I was relaxed and…”

“It’s okay, I’ll be quiet.” Misa said.

“Fine.” Invidia muttered, not wanting to start an argument. “Just, don’t touch anything, especially my cherries!” She then picked one up and stuck it in her mouth.

Misa nodded and sat, reading the magazine she had brought, as Invidia thought.

‘I can’t wear that dress…It’s nice, but it’s not my style! It’s short and a little too gothic, but if I don’t, she won’t shut up…’ She sighed as Zordar came in the room.

“Invidia…” He said.

“Hm?” She and Tamaro looked at him.

“Oh, hi Tamaro, Misa, anyway I came to tell you, the meeting went fine.”

“Sorry I couldn’t be there, I had to get cleaned up.”

“She looked horrible.” Shamura said. “It was all flour and water, it was just a mess.”

“Sorry…” Misa said.

It’s fine, I just wanted to know what happened, and I’m glad to see that you’re all right.” Zordar said.

“I’m fine, but I could use more water.” Invidia shook her glass, which was now, ice. “Please Daddy?” She begged in a cute voice.

“All right.” Zordar took it and Invidia hugged him.

“I love you…” She said.

“Yes, I love you too, Princess…” He then kissed her head and left.

Later, around ten o’clock, before she went bed, with Misa waiting in her room, Invidia put on the dress in an attempt to make her shut up and get it over with.

‘I don’t like this.’ Invidia thought as she looked at herself in the mirror, the dress fit but it was way too short. She then sighed and came out. “Happy now?”

“You look cute!” Misa said.

“In all honesty I don’t really like short dresses but I…appreciate the thought.”

“It’s okay! As long as you wore it!” Misa said, then Shamura looked her over.

“It is a little short, and I wouldn’t advise walking up stairs in this outfit…”

“Huh?”Invidia looked at her.

“It’ll come up; I can almost see your panties.” Shamura whispered.

“Yeah, no way I’m wearing this out of this room.”

“But you will wear it?” Misa eyes practically sparkled.

“Can you make it longer?”

“Uh…Sure, I can try I did make that skirt longer so it’d fit you better.”

“Well if you can do something with it, great, if not then you won’t see me wearing it. No offensive to you, I prefer more conservative clothes, and long dresses, with the exception of some dinner dresses.”

“But sometimes when you’re alone you wear only that robe and you sleep in a slip sometimes and even naked…” Misa said.

“Who told you that?!” Invidia snapped as she slipped the dress off and Misa turned.

“I heard you talking to Shamura once, when it’s really hot you sleep naked, and on rare occasions you sometimes just wear just a camisole and panties. Though I don’t blame you, I like to relax like that too…”

“Uh…okay…” Invidia said. “Just…look, I really don’t need to see it, again no offense. And, you can turn around now.” She now stood in her black nightgown.

“It’s okay! Mello’s like that too, but he got used to it, you’re never around then anyway. And I should go, it’s late…bye!” Misa left the room and Invidia turned to Shamura.

“Where’s my Father? I want him to put me to bed.”

“I told him that, he’ll be here soon, okay?”

Invidia nodded and climbed up on her bed, she took her pin out and put it on her night stand as Zordar came in.

“You’re all ready for bed, huh?” he said.

Invidia nodded. “Father, come here.” She said as she started to get under her covers.

Zordar sat on the bed and pulled them up on her, as she snuggled into them.

“I love you, good night my Princess.” Zordar said.

“I love you too.” Invidia whispered as Zordar kissed her head, she liked it, her Father really didn’t ‘put her to bed’ anymore. Only when she asked, he usually just said ‘goodnight’. She then laid down and he got up and left with Shamura, pausing only to turn the light out as he went.

The next morning, Invidia awoke to find something on her bed, it was another box.

‘What’s this? Did she fix it?’ She opened it and pulled out the dress Misa had given her, but this time it was longer, Misa had cut the skirt all together and made a new one, one that stopped at her ankles, so now it looked like more like dinner dress. ‘She really wants me to forgive her, huh?’ Invidia asked herself.

At that moment, Zordar came in. “You’re already up? Good.” He said.

“Oh Morning, Father.” Invidia said.

“I came to get you, we have to go.”

“Not another meeting?” Invidia whined.

“No, breakfast, remember? We have breakfast with the royals? From that planet we’re working with?”

“But, I still have to take a shower, and where’s Shamura? What do I wear?”

“All right, you have time to take a shower and Shamura isn’t here yet, and you’ll find something to wear, don’t worry.” He went over and hugged her. “Now go get ready, okay?”

Invidia nodded and looked down at the dress she was holding…

A little while later she in the dining room next to her Father with a couple different people around them, including the king and queen, their two children, a couple of their guards, and of course the kitchen servants, oh and Light and L, who were asked to help. They came out and set plates on the table, then went back in the kitchen where Misa and Tamaro were, they helped with food as well.

“Misa!” Light said when he came back.

“Hm?” Misa looked at him.

“Look, in the dining room.”

Misa followed him and poked her head out, she looked around until she saw what Light was talking about, there, sitting next to her Father, was Invidia in her dress. She worked all night to fix it, well, after Shamura let her use a sewing machine, and now she was wearing it! And with the choker too!

‘She looks so pretty!’ Misa thought. ‘It looks better on her then it originally did…’ She smiled and the queen turned to Invidia.

“Princess, tell me, where did you get that dress? It looks good on you and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one like it…”

“Oh, someone made it for me.” Invidia said. “Modified it actually, as a favor, so it’s one-of-a-kind.” She then turned to the kitchen, to see what was taking so long, and saw Misa. She didn’t say anything though; she looked around and quickly whispered “Thank You” to Misa.

Misa smiled, and went back in the kitchen, then, later she found something on her couch, it was a box with a note attached to it.

Misa,

It said, written in a fluent, neat cursive.

I appreciate the modifications you made to the dress, thank you. You don’t have my trust or my favor yet, but… oh I can’t believe I’m going to write this…you made me see that you do have some good qualities, even though you cause trouble. And since you gave me a dress and apparently brownies, Tamaro says (Which by the way were pretty good, I had one and gave some to Shamura and my Father, I don’t eat sweets that often) I decided to give you something, since you went to the trouble of getting something for me. (Don’t tell anyone! I have a reputation!) But this is a black Sailor Suit I had that I grew out of, it fits but it’s too short and you’re shorter than I am so, see what you can do with it, oh and thanks again.

Princess Invidia

Misa smiled. Invidia was happy with her gift! And she didn’t see that she was completely bad! She put the note down and took the Sailor suit dress out, it was black, of course and Misa wondered what it was for, she knew Invidia had been homeschooled. ‘Maybe her father bought it for her…’ she thought as she picked up her scissors and looked at it, but it didn’t need cutting… She just picked it up and put it on, it fit her fine and she twirled in it.

“What are you wearing?” Mello asked when he came in, Tamaro and Light followed.

“Invidia gave it to me! As a thank you for her dress! Isn’t it cute?”

“So she likes you now?” Light asked.

“No, not really, this was just a thank you, but if I work at it maybe she will like me.” Misa said. ‘All I have to do is work! And maybe…just maybe I can find some more goodness in her…’
