Changing Winds
Part 6
By Yuki Wildstar
David McCoy was thrilled for her accident. She didn’t remember anything about her past with the commander and he was intending on keeping it that way. He showered her with gifts to keep her from remembering anything. Every night he would visit her at the hospital and when she finally went home, he made sure that someone was outside her apartment to make sure HE would not disturb her. At her father insistent they post pone their engagement party so she can recover and finally get back to her normal life. James Forrester would call Derek every other night and tell him how she was doing. A month later James told him that there was no change. Derek Wildstar decided to walk away and live his life, but informed him that once the baby was born if she didn’t remember that he was going to sue for custody of their child. He was not walking away.
Every day she tried to remember but always came to a wall. She would ask David about their time since but he always sidetracked or had to leave. It felt odd to her that she didn’t feel the love he said they had. Maybe because of the accident she couldn’t see past that. But her mind drifted to Commander Wildstar, he was always on her mind. What was it about the young handsome officer that she felt a connection with? A man that, since the day he left the hospital, she couldn’t shake him or his words. “David, that officer that was at the hospital.”
“What about him?” He asked annoyed.
“Why would he say that we were together? Did I go to Iscandar with the Star Force?”
Tread slowly his father’s voice rang in his head. It is known history that she was in the star force and to hide that will only get her more curious. “You went to Iscandar but when you came home you came straight into my arms. We were going to wait until I made the Senate to get married but then you got pregnant with our child and we decided to get married right after you give birth. Now darling, we have explained it to you, over and over. By now you should just start making new memories with us now and our child.” He kissed the top of her head and grabbed his jacket. “I have a meeting with Congressman Gomez about what to do with employment for major companies. I will see you tomorrow. You should rest. Our engagement party is in a few days. Everyone will be there and they are just going to love you.” He told her, gave her a kiss on the forehead again and walked out the door. She wondered why if they created this child together why he wasn’t staying the night and trying to make love to her. Or was he afraid he was going to hurt their child. Her mind then drifted to the young handsome officer. She sat down in her den and began to go on the internet and search for him. There were dozens of pages of him. Just like her, he served on the star force. They both went to Iscandar and back. He was an orphan along with his older brother, Alexander Wildstar, which lives on Iscandar and married to Queen Starsha. He was well respected and took command of the Argo when the captain fell ill. As she looked through the internet, she came across a site with her picture and his together. They were in the park walking hand and hand. Another picture showed them in a warm loving embrace. The caption read. Derek Wildstar and Nova Forrester, will they be making the next leap to marriage. So, he was telling the truth at the hospital. They did have a history together. She continued to search the internet and found tons of pictures of them together. They were the IT couple. When looking up David she found only pictures of him giving speeches or with his father. The only picture she saw of her with him was a press release of their announcement of their upcoming wedding. Then there were pictures after pictures of him with numerous women. Then it hit her, an image of David and Derek in a fight. She closed her eyes and the image came to her. They were fighting over her. She saw Derek on the floor and David pushing her. Then she went up an elevator but couldn’t make out the image of the person she was going up with. She sat back and took in what she read. She thought about David. Yes, she remembered their time prior to her memory. And at one time she probably did love him. But not now. She didn’t feel the love she wanted with him. She found him to be a little cold and distant. He tipped toe around questions and when she would announce that she was going to see her father he would tell her that he needed her to go with him to a meeting or dinner. She wondered why he was trying to keep her away from her father. She would call him when he wasn’t around, and it was time to call him for more answers. She picked up the phone and dial. He answered quickly. “Hi daddy, would you like to have dinner. David is at another meeting and I really would like to see you.”
“Of course, why don’t we have dinner at my place. I’ll have the cook fix you all your favorites.” She could see his smile through the phone and she was excited to see him.
She arrived at 630 on the dot and they hugged. It’s been two weeks since he seen his daughter and saw that her stomach had grew just a little more. “Your glowing, how do you feel?” he asked his daughter.
She smiled, “it’s getting a little uncomfortable at night, but I feel great.”
“Come, Darin made something special for you.” They walked into the dining area and he pulled the chair out for her. “You look so much like your mother. She was as stunning. I do miss her a lot.”
It brought a tear to her eyes to know that while she was in space her mother got sick from the planet bombs and died. Her father eased her mind by telling her she went quick and without pain. But Nova knew better. “How was your day daddy.”
“Closed on another site, it’s going to be a great. We are looking for architects to put in their visions.”
“That’s wonderful, daddy.” She said in a sad tone.
He looked at his daughter, “Is anything wrong sweetheart?”
She shrugged her shoulders and said, “I don’t know.”
“Nova, talk to me.” He reached over and touched her hand.
“Daddy, I’m not sure if I love David. I mean at first when I came too, I thought I was but now I really don’t know. And today I was searching the internet about him. There is so much about him with other women and just political stuff. I just never picture myself with a politician. It’s not what I thought I’d be, a politician’s wife. I feel like I want more to life. Not that being a mother to our child is not enough, but I just thought.” He sat back and listen to his daughter. “And then there is the Commander. Why does he still come back into my head? Daddy, the last picture I saw of him and some woman I felt so jealous. Why am I jealous of man I’ve never had a past with? And then I saw the pictures of us together on the net. Daddy, tell me the truth, did Commander Wildstar and me have a life together?”
He bowed his head and took a deep breath. “Yes, you and he were an item.”
“What happened?”
It was time to tell her the truth. “See, Sweetheart, you broke it off with David before you left for Iscandar. You caught him cheating and well, you left. You went to Iscandar and on the way you fell in love with Wildstar. When you and the Commander returned to Earth you two live together for a while. You got pregnant and then a few weeks into it you lost the baby. You decided it was a sign that it wasn’t meant to be, so you left and came here to the states. David’s father found out that you were back, so he arranged for you and him to bump into each other. You wanted to move on, so you started to date him again. Derek was sent here for funding meeting and other things. He finally found you. See he looked all over for you since you left without telling him why. He found out that David was having an affair and he proved it to you. You and he got back together but David’s father is set for you to marry him for the status. He needs you to win his son race for congress. Its prefect, his son in the Senate and He will sit in the House, Prefect combo. They can manipulate both houses. It would be the prefect step for him since he has his eye on being President. You wanted to leave him and be with Derek, but David’s father threatened Derek’s career and any future trading with the states. We were in the works of trying to get you out without them carrying out their threat. Derek wanted to step down and be with you, but you didn’t want him to do that. So, you stayed with David until we found a way out for you.”
“The baby?” she asked as she rubbed her stomach.
He smiled at his daughter. “it’s Derek’s baby. Derek wanted to tell you, but he didn’t want you to have a setback. When the baby is born, he would file for custody.” He looked away and said, “I was going to be his lawyer. He deserves to be in his child’s life.”
She rubbed her stomach and felt a tear run down her face. “What does David and his father know about the baby?”
“They know everything. They know that Derek is the father and they were going to fight him if he filed for custody. The only thing that they have going for them is that you can’t remember.”
She took in everything he told her. All this time and David said nothing even after she asked him about the baby. She knew deep in her heart that he needed to be part of their baby’s life. “I need to see him.” She finally spoke.
He smiled, “Take my car and driver. He knows where he lives.”
Derek sat in his dining area staring at the woman in front of him. She was pretty. After what happened at the hospital he decided to move on with his life. I love Nova and miss her dearly, but will she ever get her memory back. He had to protect his heart and he decided to not see her again. When the time was right, he would file for the custody of his child with Nova’s father’s help. He didn’t want to bring him into it, but he offered his legal services. They talked about nothing, she was curious about the officer from the star force and wondered why he still live here in the states. “So, when do you think of returning back to Great Island?” She asked.
“I still have business here, once that is done then I’ll decide whether I’ll return back.”
She blew on her food and asked, “And what business is that?”
He frowned, he hated when they needed to know everything about him. “Personal, nothing to concern yourself with.” Yeah, just get her in bed and get rid of her, he thought. “Why don’t we take this in the living room, shall we?” he gave her that look of wanting her. She grinned and grabbed her wine glass. “So, tell me more about Congressman McCoy?”
“Everyone is talking about Junior’s wedding to that star force woman. Hey, did you work with her?”
“I’ve might have seen her on ship.” He said to avoid any more questions. “Have you met her?”
“No, but she doesn’t come to the building at all. They said after her accident Junior wants her resting. But to be honest, no one really knows her or seen her. Just that one picture in the papers. Which isn’t any help. I hear she is gorgeous. But then again,” she trailed off. “I’m surprise you’ve never met her on ship.
“I don’t remember her on ship. But I’ve might have bump into her and not remembered.” He said trying to avoid any more questions about her. He met her at one of his meetings with another senator in the building that both McCoy’s worked in. He watched her on and off as she talked with the other assistants in the office, getting gossip about who was sleeping with who. She would be the best to get info about both McCoy’s. He needed as much info on him in order to get custody of his child. He sat next to her on the couch and stretched his arm across the back of it then around her shoulder. He pulled her closer to him and she giggled like all the others. He leaned in and kissed her. He unbuttoned her shirt and began to move his hand, caressing her breast when his doorbell rang. He frowned and wonder who it could be. His door man was slacking and didn’t announce them so he would have a word with him tomorrow. “Excuse me.” He kissed her lips and got up to open the door. “Can I,” he began to say and stopped to see her standing there. They stood staring at each other before she finally spoke.
“Hello Commander Wildstar, can I come in?” she asked.
“Um, ah, yeah sure, please come in.” He thought he was staring at a ghost, but he knew it wasn’t and he didn’t want to break the spell. “Um, this is, um, this is, I’m sorry what was your name again?” he asked the woman he was having dinner with.
She looked annoyed at him as she buttoned her shirt back up, “It’s Mary, Mary Steudel.”
“Oh, yeah, sorry. It’s just that I was caught off guard.”
She looked familiar but wasn’t sure who she was. “Should I wait in the kitchen?”
“Hello Mary, Um, Commander can I have a word with you?” Her voice was formal and it broke his heart.
“Yes, of course. Mary, I’m sorry but can I get a rain check tomorrow.” He helped her with her coat and then leaned her down the hallway. He gave her a kiss than winked at her and touched her face. “Promise tomorrow.” He walked her to the elevator and gave her a passionate kiss. “Pick you up at the same place?”
She giggled and nodded her head. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
He walked into his apartment and found her sitting on the couch. “Ms. Forrester. So, what do I owe this pleasure?”
“Commander, my father told me everything.” She said. He sat down across from her and didn’t give any signs of emotion. She sat looking at him and thought that he was indeed handsome. His eyes showed sadness despite what his face showed. She felt her heart beat a little faster and felt the same connection when he was in the hospital. She felt that he was the one that she wanted to be with. But she didn’t remember, and it drove her crazy.
He looked down to her stomach and asked, “How are you?”
She looked to her stomach and rubbed it. “I feel good. The baby is growing more and more. I felt it kick and it keeps me up at night.” She knew that it would make him feel good to hear that. Now that she knew it was his child, she wanted to do what was right and involve him in his baby’s life. “Commander,”
“Call me Derek, please.” He told her.
She gave a slight smile and said. “Derek, I don’t remember our life together, but I do know that this is our child together and I would like for you to be a part of this. It’s not fair that you are not involved. It is your child.” His heartbeat so fast he thought it would burst. “My father vouched for you, and I trust him. You’re not a stalker, are you? Because David says you are.”
“No, I’m not.” So that is how he portrayed him to be to her. “I could never hurt you.” He said softly. He looked into her eyes and asked. “May I?” She nodded and he walked over to her and touched her stomach. His heart sore to feel his child in her. It was perfect timing as he placed his hand on her stomach the baby moved inside of her. She knew then that he was the father of her baby. “Wow that’s amazing.” He said in awe.
She giggled. David never touched her the way he was now. He never showed any emotion to her about the baby. She would ask him if he would like to touch her stomach but he flat out and said, no. Now she knew why. He wasn’t her baby’s father. Only when they were in public, he showed his affection. He showed her to all like a trophy he won at the carnival. “Commander, I mean Derek, I think this going to get complicated. I know that David will not agree to this, but you have a right to be part of this.”
“Thank you,” he tried to hold back his tears and looked away. There was something about this man that stood in front of her. His eyes were warm and loving. She didn’t feel threaten by this man. She was more curious about him the longer she stayed.
“Command, sorry Derek. Can you tell me about yourself?” She asked.
“What would you like to know?” He said as he sat back down.
“Tell me about us. Where did we meet? What did we talk about?” She wanted to know about their life together.
He sat back and smiled. “We actually met in the hallway of the underground hospital. My friend, Venture and I bumped into you. We then found out that we both were on the mission to Iscandar. We worked together on the bridge and you worked on and off in the medical ward. We eventually hit it off and well, we fell in love. I didn’t realize how much in love I was until I almost lost you on the way back home. See we were in our last battle and Dessler the leader of Gamilon’s boarded our ship. They sprayed toxic fumes into the ship. You ran and started the Cosmo DNA machine stopping the fumes from spreading. But you winded up taking in more of the DNA and slipped into a coma. I thought I lost you. But then you woke up and I was over the moon. We became exclusive once we got to Earth. We actually moved in together and were happy. But you lost our first baby. It was too much for you to handle. See I wasn’t prepared to be a father when you told me the first time. And you sensed it. You thought that when you lost the baby that it was a big relief for me. But it wasn’t. It tore me apart. You, well, you thought it was best to walk away and let me live my life without you. You tore my heart apart. You left without saying goodbye. I guess you thought you were suffocating me, but little did you know you were my oxygen. I couldn’t breathe without you. I still can’t. I looked for you for almost a year. Then I found you. Funny it was here in Washington DC that I found you. Out of all the places I looked, you walked right by me on the streets. The minute I saw you I knew it was a second chance. You took my breath away, and you still do. Just you being here makes me want to take you in my arms.” She gave him a concern look. “I’m sorry I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable. But it’s hard to sit here and not want to hold you in my arms. Please don’t fear me, I would never hurt you. I love you and I am a gentleman and officer. Anyway, we got back together and I guess your father filled in the rest.”
“What is it that you do, Commander.” She asked to change the subject.
He grinned knowing that she was changing the subject. “I am a tactical officer. You were chief of operations and raider tech.” They talked on about things and her pregnancy. He gave her as much information as he could and he answered all her questions. She looked at her watch and realized it was getting late. “Wait before you go, I’d like to give you something.” He raced into his bedroom and came out with a small velvet box. “I want you to have this. It belongs to you now. I have no need for it.” He placed it in her hand and she opened it slowly. In the middle sat the engagement ring he gave her and their wedding ring.
“I, I, I can’t take this. I don’t know you.”
“I don’t need it.” He wanted to cry.
“Wouldn’t you want to give this to the women you will marry?”
“I gave it to you. I want you to have it.” He figured after talking with her that she didn’t know about their marriage. No one knew, only Homer, Venture and her father. Her father gave them back to him when he left the hospital. He wanted to tell her, but life was already chaotic and he didn’t want to tell her until the time was right. “Why don’t I walk you out.” They left his building to the awaiting car outside. She looked into his eyes and felt the electricity with him. He took her hand and kissed it. “Get home safe. And thank you.”
“Thank you, Commander.” She said and slipped into the car. He watched as it drove off.
