Babysitter Misa?

An Invidia/Death Note short by AMI MEITSU

A/N: This takes place when Invidia’s just a baby, and as for how they got there, the whole crossover idea itself used to be a crossover with Sailor Moon as well, so let’s say they went through the time gate…

“Misa, are we lost again?” Near asked as he followed her down a long and somewhat unfamiliar looking hallway.

“No! I know where I’m going! This is where Invidia’s room is!” Misa said in a matter-of-factly voice as they walked, but she soon realized that she was wrong as she came to the location.

“Where is it? This isn’t it! It’s…it’s too small! And I don’t…”

At that moment Invidia or who they thought was Invidia came in, she was carrying something.

“Invidia!” Misa came in and the women turned around.

“Hm?” She said.

“What happened? Your hair… it’s different…and…and…”

“Who are you?!”

“You don’t remember? I’m Misa! Don’t play games, Invidia!”

“My name is Sabera, this is Invidia….” She turned the ‘thing’ which was actually…

“You have a baby! She’s so cute! But I never saw you as motherly.”

“Who are you?!”

“I told you not to play games, Invidia! Sorry, I mean, Princess, since you don’t like me calling you by your name.”

“For the last time, my name is Sabera! This is Invidia!” Sabera showed Misa the baby again.

“Huh?” Misa looked at Invidia and then looked around, the room did look different and there seemed to be no trace of Invidia’s usual things…then she remembered something Invidia once told her when she picked up a picture off of her nightstand.

“Don’t touch that! Don’t you ever touch it! It’s dear to me and I don’t want you breaking it!” Invidia snatched the picture out of her hands.

“What is it?”

“If you must know, she’s my mother…”

“But I’ve never…”

“She passed away a long time ago, and that’s all you need to know, so hands off!”

Misa looked up at Sabera, who did, indeed looked like the woman in the picture. ‘Could this woman really be…?’ “Sabera?”

“Finally, you say it right, but who are you?”

“Well, I’m Misa Amane and that’s Mello and Near.” She pointed out the door. “How we got in is complicated but we’re here! And… who exactly are you?”

“Lady Sabera, I’m what you’d call the mistress of the Comet Empire. Why are you here?”

“I can’t explain, but we just came…” Misa said. “And…”

“Hm?”

Misa looked at Invidia, who just stared back. “And she’s so cute! Can I hold her?” She got in Invidia’s face. “I love you!”

At that Invidia began to cry.

“What did I do?! I…I didn’t mean to!”

“She doesn’t like anyone but me or her Father in her face.”

“Wait a minute…if you’re….then where’s Invidia?!”

“Right here…” Sabera said as she slightly bounced her.

‘We’ve gone so far back…she’s a baby! And I never thought that she’d be so cute!’ “I wanna hold her!”

“No!” Sabera snapped. “You’ll scare her! Back off!” She then turned and left the room, glancing at Mello and Near as she headed down the hall.

“What’s her problem?” Near asked. “Now she seems worse than Invidia…”

“If that’s possible…” Mello mumbled.

“I think she’s just being protective because here Invidia’s a baby…what year is it anyway?”

Near and Mello shrugged.

“Oh well, let’s go! I have to talk to her!” Misa ran down the hall with Near and Mello following, however, they only followed because she knew more about the locations then they did, or so it seemed. They all ended up walking and walking and walking until they finally found Sabera with Zordar in her own sitting room. Zordar had Invidia sitting up on his lap while he shook her rattle in front of her.

“She’s so cute…but all she does is giggle…” Zordar looked at Sabera.

“She’s a baby, she doesn’t understand, all she knows is that it makes noise, now give it to her.”

He did and Invidia gladly shook it at her parents.

“Cute!” Misa said as she came in.

“Oh… you again!” Sabera said.

“Who?”

“My name’s Misa Amane…” Misa figured that since Invidia was just a baby, her Father would not know about her. “And behind me are Mello and Near, we’re actually not from around here and how we got here is complicated, so don’t ask!”

“Whatever, I have to go…” He handed Invidia to Sabera.

“Go where?” Sabera asked.

“To get ready, we’re going out tonight, remember? It’s our night out…”

“No! Zordar, I didn’t tell you… Nadeshiko cancelled, something came up and…”

“But Sabera, it’s our night out! We planned this weeks ago, I mean, do you know how long it takes to get a reservation at that restaurant?!”

“We’re the Cometine Royals! We could’ve called today and gotten a spot!”

“Yes, but I don’t like abusing our power that way!”

“I’ll do it!” Misa interrupted. “They’ll help too!”

“WHAT?!” Mello and Near had wide eyes.

“Please! Let me do it, I’ve done it before! Please!”

“Well this was supposed to be our romantic night…” Sabera mumbled. “Fine, you can watch her! Just be careful!”

“Yay!” Misa went over and Sabera carefully handed her Invidia, and to her surprise Misa actually held her fine…and Invidia didn’t seem to care that she’d been handed off, or so it seemed.

Invidia soon began to cry.

“Oh no! Shush baby…” Misa bounced her. “It’s okay…”

“Here…” Sabera gave her the rattle, to which she smiled and grabbed it. “When she cries check her diaper first, then try her toys, if that doesn’t work then she’s probably hungry or she wants either me or Zordar…If that’s the case then play one of my recordings or give her a picture, okay?”

Misa nodded. “Right, but where do I find her toys?”

“Most of them are in the nursery, they’re in a toy box in her closet along with clothes for when she needs to go to bed, which is at seven-thirty, but don’t be surprised if she doesn’t sleep through the night, sometimes she will and sometimes she won’t, just so you know.” Sabera told her.

Misa nodded again. “Okay, I’ll take good care of her!”

“And one more thing…if you’re going to feed her then go down to the kitchen and just tell them that Invidia needs a bottle, they know what to do.”

“All right, I got it, just go have fun!”

Sabera nodded and left to go get ready, as she thought to herself, ‘I hope I’m not forgetting anything…I mean, this is the first time a servant isn’t watching Invidia and I only trust few to do that…oh, if only Nadeshiko hadn’t canceled!’

About a half hour later, Sabera told Misa some last minute things and headed out with Zordar, leaving Invidia alone with Misa, Mello and Near.

“So, what do we do with her?” Near asked.

“Here…” Misa handed her over to him.

“But I don’t know what to do with the baby!”

“Play with her.”

“But you’re the babysitter!”

“I know, but I have to go get something real quick, just take her for five minutes, please?”

Mello and Near reluctantly nodded and carried Invidia to the nursery. She gave them weird ‘who the heck are you?’ looks.

“You know…” Mello started. “I can’t believe that this cute little thing grows into well…such a mean woman…”

Near shrugged at that as they came into the room. “Here,” he handed her to Mello. “Sit her up on the floor and I’ll find some toys…”

Mello did just that, he held her up as Near place a set of stackable rings in front of Invidia. It was something that Zordar question, he figured that Invidia didn’t quite get it and that Sabera’s buying the toy was pointless, but Invidia did seem to like it…well she liked that she could throw and chew the rings…only rarely were they stacked right or at all, for that matter.

“See?” Near placed the rings in front of her and then held up the bottom red one. “Now, what do we do with this?”

Invidia reached out and he gave to her, hoping that she’d get it, but she just chewed on it.

“No!” He said as he took it. “Look….” Near placed it on the plastic pole. “We don’t chew on it, we stack it, try again…” He gave her the orange one.

Invidia threw it at him, as she did with the next one, and then she chewed on the fifth one.

“Okay! I give up! You’re not doing it right!” Near grabbed the blue ring out of her hand and turned his back on her as he started to stack the rings.

Mello gave him a questionable look, he knew Near liked toys but…baby toys?

Invidia looked at him, and realizing that her toy was just snatched away from her, she began to cry.

“What happened?” Misa asked as she came back in.

“Near broke the baby!” Mello said.

“It’s not my fault she can’t play right!”

“She’s just a baby!” Misa picked her up and hugged her, then she bounced her a bit and soon enough Invidia’s cries turned to whimpers and Misa gave her the pacifier Sabera had told her about.

“Good girl…” She lightly patted Invidia’s head and put her in the baby carrier she brought. She then turned to Mello and Near. “I leave for five minutes to get her carrier and you make her cry! Why?”

“I told you, it’s not my fault. She needs to learn to stack rings right, all she wants to do is throw and chew them!”

“She’s a baby! She doesn’t get it yet! You have to show her and interact with her! Right, sweetie?” Misa turned back to Invidia, who just looked at her.

“Hey, what’s with the carrier anyway?”

“It’s so we don’t have to hold her up, and Sabera said that she doesn’t mind it, as long as you don’t put her in and leave her.”

Mello and Near shrugged at each other as Misa took the stackable rings and went back over to Invidia.

“They’re mean, aren’t they baby?” Misa asked. “Let Misa-Misa show you, okay?”

She gave her the first ring and then guided her hands to the pole. “See how this works?”

Invidia giggled, losing her pacifier in the process, but it didn’t bother her.

“Now try another one…” She handed the second one the Invidia, who just looked at it and then threw it at her.

Misa took her hand. “No, do not throw things, okay?”

Invidia gave her a blank look.

“Never mind, let’s play with something else….” She went into the closet to look for something else but…all she saw were cute baby clothes. “No! Let’s play dress up!”

“What?!” Mello and Near looked at her and for the next hour Misa spent her time carefully dressing Invidia in various cute outfits. Invidia didn’t seem to care, or rather; she didn’t know what was going on…but soon she began to cry.

“Oh, what’s wrong?” Misa picked her up. “Huh?” She looked her over and felt her. “I think she needs to be changed…”

“I’m not doing it!” Mello and Near said at once, then they left before Misa could say no.

“You guys are babies yourselves!” Misa huffed as she went over to the changing table and took care of her, then she put Invidia in a cute blue sleeper she found and took her down to the dining room.

“Now let’s see…” She muttered as she looked at her watch. “Sabera said to feed her at 5:45, let her settle and then put her to bed…” She looked at the time again. “And it’s almost time!” She put the carrier on the table. “Stay…”

Misa then headed into the kitchen.

“Who are you?” One of the servants asked. “Misa Amane, I’m the stand-in baby-sitter, and…”

“Feeding time, right? Hold on.” She gave Misa a bottle a moment later.

“Thanks!” Misa took it, checked it, and then went over and picked Invidia up. “Look, Princess, I got you a bottle…” She sat down with her, and holding her in the right position, she gave Invidia the bottle.

Misa smiled at her as she watched…and after a few minutes she took the empty bottle and burped Invidia, who just looked at her afterwards.

“Now, your Mama said to give you a bath and then get your pajamas…” Misa said as she got up. ‘She said that a woman named Rima would help me…’ She thought as she came into Sabera’s bathroom, there a woman with wavy blonde hair was waiting.

“Rima?”

“Oh, you must be the baby-sitter, yes I’m Rima. I’m usually Sabera’ s bath servant and I normally don’t help like this since Nadeshiko usually babysits and does it, but Sabera thought since you were new you might need help.” Rima said.

“Nadeshiko?”

“Sabera’s main servant, but she’s more of a friend then a servant. She usually watches Invidia. Now come on.” Rima lead her over to where she set up a small baby bath. “She sometimes bathes with her mother but when she’s watched we just give her a regular bath. Let me see her…”

Misa gave Invidia to Rima, who undressed her and put her in the bath, she seemed to like it.

“You’re so cute! Here…” Misa gave her a rubber duck that Rima had found for her.

Invidia ignored Misa and looked at Rima, who started to wash her with Misa’s help, and soon afterwards Rima picked her up, wrapped her in a towel and handed her back to Misa.

“Why is she squirming?” Misa asked.

“It’s hard to keep her still when she’s being dried, even Sabera has trouble…just, let her settle down first, she eventually does…”

Misa nodded and took Invidia back to the nursery, and as she walked Invidia finally calmed down. “Good girl…” Misa kissed her head as they came into the room. And soon Misa had her changed and ready for bed in a dark purple nightgown that she had found.

“Your Mama likes dark colors, huh?” She said. “Then again… they do look better on you.”

Invidia looked at her and then reached up and tried to grab one of Misa’s pigtails.

“No, No!” Misa said. “Don’t do that, just come here…” She picked her up again. “It’s almost time for bed anyway…” She put Invidia down in her crib and the showed her Sabera-bear.

“You’ll still have this a long time from now…” She said. “A really long time, right now you’re only three months old, and you’ll have it until you’re all grown up. Neat huh?”

Invidia just looked at her and then made a grab for the bear.

Misa handed it over, even though she knew Invidia wasn’t going to be happy when it was taken away, since babies weren’t supposed to sleep with fuzzy toys Sabera said. She smiled and then remembered somethings else. ‘She also said to give Invidia a bottle of water when she went to bed! I have to go back to the kitchen….but I can’t leave her alone…’ “Stay here for a minute.” Misa said right before she went into Zordar’s sitting room, where Mello and Near were watching TV, just as she thought.

“Guys! Come here!” She called.

“But we’re watching TV!” Mello said.

“You don’t even know what they’re saying!”

So?” Near gave her a look.

“Just come on!”

They did as Misa took them back to the nursery. “Watch her for a few minutes while I get a bottle of water for her, okay?”

“Yeah, yeah…” Both said as Misa left.

Near went over to her crib. “Hey Mello, doesn’t this look familiar?”

“Hm?” Mello looked at the bear that he picked up. “Yeah…I do remember that…”

At that moment Invidia started to whine and reach up for the bear.

“I think she wants it back…” Mello said.

“Fine…” Near gave it back as she just held it, then she smiled.

“You know, I’m surprised that she used to be so cute…”

“And then she grew into a beautiful, mean Princess.”

Mello nodded just as Misa came back in.

“Oh good, she’ s not crying.” She said as she went over, took Sabera-bear out and gave her the bottle.

“What’s with the bottle?”

“Sabera said that she likes to take a bottle of water to bed with her and despite what’s in the movies and TV, you don’t give them milk or juice it cause tooth decay or something…”

Mello and Near just shrugged and watched as Misa put a light blanket over Invidia and kissed her head. “Good night baby…” She said as she walked out with Mello and Near and turned out the light.

“You think she’ll sleep through?”

“I hope so, but just in case I have the monitor!” Misa showed them the baby monitor and walked off.

She went to go watch TV until Zordar and Sabera came back, thanked and paid her, then she walked off saying that she was going home…

“So, you think Invidia was really as good as she said?” Sabera asked.

“Of course,” Zordar replied.

“Well I’m gonna go check on her…”

“And then?”

“And then we can…a…you know…,” Sabera blushed as then walked off to the nursery, where, sure enough, Invidia was fast asleep. ‘Aw…she’s so cute…’“She went over. “I love you…my little Princess…” she whispered. Then she left and once she was in the hall she grabbed Zordar and pulled him into their bedroom to finish off the night. And, when Sabera woke up the next morning she found something.

‘What’s this…?’ She picked up a note off of the nightstand on her side, it was from Misa…

Lady Sabera,

Thanks for trusting me to babysit! It was fun, and I appreciated your consideration…and since I probably won’t see you again I’ll say good luck with Invidia now! I know she’s happy with a Mama like you…

Misa

“That’s kind of sweet…but where’d they go?” Sabera mumbled as she got up, threw a robe on and went into the nursery…only to find Invidia up and playing with her blanket…as, it was the only thing in the crib.

“Hi Baby…Mama’s back now…then again you did see me five times last night….” Sabera said as she picked her up. “Were you good for the babysitter? She seemed to like you.” Sabera sighed. ‘But I wonder…where did she go?’

2200…

“We better be back in the right year!” Misa said.

“I hope so, or I’m going to kill someone…” Mello said.

“Well, why don’t we check?” Misa nodded and they went down the hall, but by accident they ended up in Zordar’s bedroom, but it did help, next to him was a woman…

“Princess?” Misa asked as she entered the room, she then looked at the clock and realized that it was actually early in the morning.

The woman stirred a bit and looked up. “Father?” She said.

“Princess!” Misa said.

“Huh?!” Invidia turned. “No, not you! I thought we got rid of you!”

“No, you didn’t!” Misa said.

Invidia groaned and Zordar hugged her. “Calm, down, okay? It’s not that big a deal.”

“Fine…I’m just gonna go…” Invidia huffed as she got up and headed back into her room. “Stupid people…never do anything for me…” She mumbled.

Misa just smiled, she wasn’t going to tell Invidia about the babysitting thing…but she thought it was nice to know that they at least did one thing for Invidia…even if she had been a baby.‘I think one thing is good enough…even if only three of us know!’ She then smiled and headed down to the kitchen to see if Light was still around.
